HPU opens Elite Eight
volleyball Thursday

The top-rannked Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball team left for Sioux Falls, S.D., last night, the site of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament which begins Thursday.

The Sea Warriors open up against Grand Valley State of Michigan at 10:30 a.m. HST on Thursday.

The winner of the match will move on to the national semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the match between California University (Pa.) and Pace (N.Y.). The championship game is Saturday at 3 p.m.

HPU's matches will be broadcast live on KUMU 1500-AM.

Other teams in the Elite Eight are North Alabama, Tampa, West Texas A&M and Augustana (S.D.).

VW drag racing Saturday

The Winter Bug-In 2000, featuring Volkswagens, is at Hawaii Raceway Park in Kapolei Saturday night.

The drag racing event also include a Volkswagen car show and parade, and a swap meet.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying from 5:30 to 7:30 and eliminations starting at 8 p.m.

Pros lead Burns golf

Led by Jerry Mullen and Ivan Cunningham, the professional team took a 5- lead over the amateur team heading into today's final round of the John A. Burns Challenge Cup at the Koolau Golf Course.

Mullen and Cunningham turned in the largest margin of victory of the match-play round, a 5 and 4 win over Grant Yasui and Clayton Gomi. The pros won five best-ball matches and halved one.

Alternate-ball play was canceled due to wet conditions.

Karting clinic this week

The second annual Memo Gidley Karting Clinic is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ford Island.

Gidley is a auto racing driver in the CART FedEx Championship Series who drives a Go-Kart in his spare time. He will hold an autograph session Friday at All Star Hawaii, 2080 Kalakaua Ave., No. 102, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Hitting camp coming up

The deadline to register for the Christmas Hitting Camp at Castle High School is Friday.

The baseball camp is Dec. 26-28 at the Castle High field and is limited to the first 30 applicants.

Players will be placed in groups of three for highly structured, personalized and focused attention for one hour daily in hitting skills.

The $140 fee includes Coop DeRenne's second video tape.

Obtain registration forms at McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods, Rainbow Sports and Wesport.

Fever winner perfect 10-0

Christmas came early for Ed Takata.

The Honolulu resident went 10-0 in last week's Football Fever contest, winning $500 and two tickets to the Jan. 20 Hula Bowl in Maui.

"I've been playing for years but I've never won,'' said Takata. Takata said he plans to spend the money on Christmas gifts.

The top Fever panelist was KITV's Robert Kekaula (9-1).

This is the final week for the Star-Bulletin's contest. Today's ballot is on B-5.
