Lee ‘Most Inspirational’
player for UH Wahine

Aven Lee received the Most Inspirational Award from her University of Hawaii volleyball teammates last night during the unbeaten Wahine's annual banquet at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel.

Lee and fellow seniors Jessica Suddeth and Andrea Gomez Tukuafu will be honored after Wednesday's match against Texas-El Paso.

Fans attending tomorrow's UH-Rice match are asked to bring donations of any kind to the Hilo Flood Victim Relief Fund.

HPU women win regional

Hawaii Pacific's unbeaten women's volleyball struggled past Cal State San Bernardino in a five-game marathon Saturday at Los Angeles to win the NCAA Division II Pacific Regional and advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in three years.

The Lady Sea Warriors (25-0) won, 15-7, 12-15, 15-10, 9-15, 15-12.

HPU's Susy Garbelotti, Debbie Sant'Anna and Nia Tuitele were named to the all-regional team along with Jamie Liefveld and Kim Morohunfola of San Bernardino and Jamie Griffin of Cal State-Los Angeles.

Blomme seventh in nationals

Lisa Blomme of Hawaii Pacific University placed seventh in the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships Saturday at Prado Park, Calif.

Two weeks ago, Blomme placed second in the regional championships on the same course to qualify for the national meet.

She finished Saturday's four-mile race in 22 minutes, 7.2 seconds, 37 seconds faster than her regional time.

With her seventh-place showing, Blomme also became an All-American.

Mario Venalainen of Kennesaw State won the race in 21.33.6.

UH swim teams win

University of Hawaii women posted NCAA qualifying times in several events in an 83-30 victory over Cal State Northridge Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Pool.

The UH men also defeated the Matadors, 67-24.

Freshman Georgi Kinsela was clocked at 1 minute, 2.82 seconds in the 100 breaststroke and 2:16.49 in the 200 breaststroke events.

Sophomore Renate DuPlessis did 55.17 seconds in the 100 butterfly and 2:02.51 in the 200 fly.

Also making the NCAA cut in the 200 breaststroke was sophomore Morgan Hoesterey, with a 2:17.44 clocking.

DuPlessis, Kinsela, Lori Thomas and Sarah Simonsen qualified for the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.73.

Silva women's surf champ

Brazil's Jaqueline Silva captured the women's G-Shock Hawaiian Pro surfing title Saturday at Haleiwa.

Silva beat out South Africa's Heather Clarke and Australia's Lynette MacKenzie and Pauline Menczer in the final.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo placed equal seventh and equal ninth, respectively.

Kapiolani Park Turkey Trot

The Honolulu Marathon Clinic/Department of Parks and Recreation Turkey Trot, an unusual 10-mile training run that even the slowest can win, will start in Kapiolani Park on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23.

Participants will run at their predicted marathon pace, with prizes - five turkeys, 20 pumpkin pies - awarded to those who come closest to their predicted times.

The entry fee is $1. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. at the park bandstand.

Winter Special Olympics

The Special Olympics Hawaii Holiday Classic Winter Games will be held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1-3.

Competition and awards for figure skating and speed skating are set for the Ice Palace, Nov. 30.

Basketball, bowling and bocce competitions and awards will be held at the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay, Pali Lanes and Kailua High School, Dec. 1-3.

Some 800 Special Olympic athletes from more than 50 delegations throughout Hawaii will compete.

Opening ceremonies are Dec. 1 featuring the traditional parade of athletes and torch lighting ceremony. The awards banquet and victory dance are Dec. 2.

Aloha Gymfest on tap

The 25th annual Aloha Gymfest will be held Jan. 12-14 at the Kailua High School gymnasium.

There will be competitors from the mainland, Japan, Australia, Canada and Hawaii.

All-day passes costing from $4 to $8 will be available at the door.
