Honolulu Police Department Crimestoppers

4 crime-spree suspects are sought by police

Police today were searching for four young men who went on a four-hour crime spree early yesterday that included three armed robberies, a kidnapping and an auto theft.

The spree began at the drive-through lane of the Jack in the Box restaurant on North School Street at about 1 a.m., where the suspects damaged one woman's car, beat another motorist and attempted to kidnap his girlfriend, and stole a car.

The incidents all occurred in a span of less than three minutes, police said.

At the Jack in the Box, they smashed the driver's-side window of a car driven by a woman, 52. The woman, however, was able to drive off.

The suspects then converged on a second vehicle. They pulled a 22-year-old man from the vehicle, beat him and tried to drive off with his girlfriend, 20, still in the car. But the man was able to pull her from the car.

The suspects then broke into the parked Subaru and drove off.

The suspects then drove to Kailua and entered a 7-Eleven store at 1247 Kailua Road at 4:10 a.m. A female clerk was threatened with a wooden baton and the suspects fled with cash, her purse and cigarettes.

At 5 a.m., they robbed a Chevron convenience store at 777 Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City.

One of the suspects, armed with a knife, demanded the clerk open the safe. When she could not, he reached over the counter, took an unknown item and fled in a waiting Subaru.

A half-hour later in Kalihi, a police officer spotted the four men in the stolen Subaru.

The men got out of the vehicle at the corner of Hiu and Kalama streets, jumped a fence and fled into a housing area, eluding the police officer.

A suspect was still being sought.
