HILO -- Backup quarterback Justin Faimealelei scored two touchdowns and the Bulldogs' defense added another as Kaimuki shut out Hilo, 20-0, last night at Wong Stadium.

The victory lifts the Bulldogs into a state championship semifinal game against Kahuku, a team that beat them 40-0 two weeks ago.

A crowd of more than 4,000 watched the tenacious Bulldogs' defense record six quarterback sacks -- three by Kaulana Kaluna -- and force three turnovers. Kaluna's first sack of Hilo quarterback Davin Feary resulted in a fumble, which was scooped up by Soloni Taumalolo and returned 25 yards for a score.

The Kaimuki offense dominated the line of scrimmage, piling up 281 yards, 213 on a relentless ground attack. Taumalolo battered his way for 74 yards on 13 carries, while Faimealelei added 58 yards on nine carries.

The Vikings were in the game in the first half, repelling Kaimuki twice, deep in Hilo territory. But a muffed punt late in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs great field position; the OIA's third seed scored on a 3-yard run by Faimealelei with less than a minute left in the half.

Hilo was held to 80 yards of total offense.

Kaimuki closed out the scoring on a 33-yard run by Faimealelei, who danced his way through the Hilo secondary.

The postseason blues continued for the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. Last year, Konawaena lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Kahuku.

Since 1983, the BIIF is 3-15 against neighbor island schools.
