Local beauties
come home

NOT just one, but TWO Miss Americas from Hawaii areMug shot in town at the moment. There was a big to-do when our new Miss America, Angela Baraquio, flew in for her first visit to Hawaii since winning her title. She's been spending some time with family when not making personal appearances. She and her Miss America court did manage to sneak away and watch a movie at Dole Cannery Theatres. So what would this wholesome group choose to see? Why, "Charlie's Angels," of course. Dole Theaters G.M. Bob Zacha even treated the ladies to some buttered popcorn -- hey, the competition is over, so don't worry about the calories so much ... Meanwhile, our other Miss America, Carolyn Sapp, flew in for some R&R and to visit Isle friends. She's now involved in TV and movie production in L.A. ...

THEN there's Randy Hongo, who sang the Miss America song for Angie in Atlantic City, even adding (with permission) a second verse which began, "There she is, Miss America; There she is, our inday." (Ask someone who speaks the language.) Hongo was a bit taken aback when his son, Andrew, who's with Angel Records, went to a big party in Washington attended by many showbiz figures, and made something of a showbiz faux pas. When someone pointed out, "There's the girl from 'Gilligan's Island,' " he responded with, "What's Gilligan's Island?" Randy was astonished that his son, a grad of both Punahou and Yale, apparently never watched the old Bob Denver series on Nickelodeon ...

Rabbit turns 80

QUICK like a bunny. That's how folks describe legendary surfer Rabbit Kekai, who just turned 80. Where else for the old gang to congregate for a celebration than at Duke's Waikiki? Lei up to his ears, Rabbit laughed and reminisced with such fellow Waikiki beachboys as Blue Makua Jr., Jama Kekai and Gabby Makalaina. And other surfers who showed up to pay their respects were Joey Cabell, Mike Latronic and Bonga Perkins ... And while none of his many rabbits lived to be 80, Hawaii's ambassador to the world of magic, Jimmy Yoshida, celebrated his 80th birthday this week as well. Yoshida received an "Ageless Heroes" award from HMSA for a lifetime of entertaining and teaching others. Attending the party was a young magician who owes much of his love of magic to the venerable Yoshida, John Hirokawa, and the two remain friends ...

SOME dedicated golfers go through life without hitting a hole-in-one, masking their grief by suggesting that at least they weren't required to buy the house a round. But it was a bit different for Sanford Nojima, who got his first ever "ace" on the 130-yard, 5th hole on the Hapuna Golf Course. Nojima, you see, is the G.M. of the Westin Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, leaving me to wonder if he bought the traditional drink for everyone in the hotel or just the clubhouse ...

Whether the weather

DURING the several months they spent touring the United States in an RV, former Isle residents David and MaryAnne Stubenberg encountered everything from fires in the West to hurricanes in the East. They're hoping for some tropical weather Sunday when they return to La Pietra to again attend the Sunset Jazz Etc. concert featuring Jimmy Borges, Shari Lynn and Gabe Baltazar. They're all old friends of MaryAnne's since her days as development director for the Honolulu Symphony. Sunday's event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. ...
