After 16 years on the professional surfing tour, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia finally was able to ride the waves of the North Shore as world champion, and he looked the part yesterday in the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro contest at Haleiwa.

In a 6- to 8-foot swell, the recently crowned champ of the 2000 ASP world tour barreled through the third round with a clear-cut heat victory over Japan's Mineto Ushikoshi, Puerto Rico's Carlos Caberos and Hawaii's Roy Powers.

Among others advancing past the third round were Myles Padaca and Jason Shibata of Hawaii.

Hawaii Pacific tops Yonsei

Nick Spajic popped in 23 points and took down seven rebounds, leading Hawaii Pacific University to a 90-57 exhibition basketball victory over South Korea's Yonsei University last night at Blaisdell Arena.
