Pool chlorination error routs some at Wailuku

WAILUKU -- Incorrect chlorine tablets put in the chlorinator are suspected as the reason for a burst pipe that caused a chlorine leak at county swimming pools in Wailuku Town yesterday, prompting an evacuation of several homes and stopping traffic on the adjacent South Market Street.

No one was hurt, and residents were able to return in about an hour, the county said.

The evacuation took place downwind along Pakahi Street, after fire rescue officials received the call at 2:35 p.m.

The two swimming pools were closed today.

Waipahu library sale scheduled Saturday

The Friends of Waipahu Public Library will hold a book sale there from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Donations of books, cassette tapes, compact discs and videos may be dropped off prior to the sale during library hours, including from 1 to 5 p.m. tomorrow. The library is at 94-275 Mokuola St.

Waikiki-Kapahulu library reopens today

The Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library, closed temporarily for renovations, is scheduled to reopen today.

Renovations included the replacement of light fixtures and termite treatment. The library, at 400 Kapahulu Ave., has been closed since Sept. 30.

Big Island trail, park expansion wins OK

HILO -- President Bill Clinton has signed legislation allowing expansion of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and creation of a new national trail on the Big Island, the White House has announced.

The new Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Adjustment Act allows the park to buy land for expansion. Unlike most other parks in the nation, Hawaii Volcanoes could previously acquire land only through donation or exchange.

The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Act designates 175 miles of a Hawaiian trail dating back to the 1400s and circling three-fourths of the Big Island as historic. The Department of the Interior will administer the trail, which crosses government and private lands.

Affordable housing to be added in Kona

KAILUA-KONA -- Gov. Ben Cayetano and others took part in a groundbreaking for a 36-unit project of affordable rental units in North Kona.

The $5.15 million project will be phase 2 of the Hualalai Elderly Affordable Apartments. A previous phase of the project off Hualalai Street had 30 units, according to the state Housing and Community Development Corp.

The state and federally funded project will be open to elderly singles earning $17,800 a year or less and to elderly couples earning $20,350 or less.

Woman arrested for theft of Blaisdell parking fees

A 42-year-old Waimanalo woman was arrested yesterday for first-degree theft and money laundering in a police white-collar investigation into Blaisdell Center parking fees.

The woman is an employee of the company in charge of the parking lot, said Det. Timothy Walsh. She was arrested at 10:45 a.m. yesterday and later released pending further investigation for possible indictment at a later date.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by the city and is looking into theft of funds dating back to January 1999. It involves more than $30,000 in fees, Walsh said.

Police nab bank robbery suspect, 41, in Liliha

Police chased and captured a suspect shortly after the Liliha branch of First Hawaiian Bank was robbed yesterday morning.

James B. Mitchell, 41, allegedly handed a demand note to the teller, who filled a bag with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police caught Mitchell on Liliha Street.

Man suspected of abuse held on $50,000 bail

An Aiea man is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail for repeated abuse of a household member.

Dane Kobayashi, who has three prior convictions of abusing a household member, was charged with felony abuse yesterday for an incident reported Friday.

Police seek help finding suspect in Hilo fruit theft

HILO -- Police are asking for the public's help in finding out who stole tropical fruit from a farm in Papaikou, north of Hilo.

About 150 pounds of rambutan was taken between Wednesday and Friday of last week, they said.

Man, 29, hunted after escape on Big Island

HILO -- Police were looking for a man who escaped from custody Sunday while being transported from Waimea to Hilo.

Dale Daniel Arruda, 29, already wanted on four warrants, was arrested for allegedly stealing a motorcycle, numerous traffic violations during a chase and several drug offenses. He is 5 feet 7, 160 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes. He has numerous tattoos, including two court jesters, a cross with a heart, a clown, and the words "Fozu Boy."

Maui kayaker rescued with fire helicopter

WAILUKU -- Maui fire officials used a helicopter to rescue a kayaker about 100 yards outside Maliko Bay in northeast Maui.

Acting Assistant Fire Chief Greg Chong Kee said the 50-year-old Haiku man was unable to return to shore because of high surf and strong currents. The helicopter put him on shore at Maliko Bay shortly after 2:23 p.m. yesterday, Chong Kee said.
