Kotomitsuki
upsets Musashimaru
in Kyushu sumo

FUKUOKA, Nov. 15 (Kyodo) - Rank-and-filer Kotomitsuki rewrote the script Wednesday as the No. 9 maegashira threw down grand champion Musashimaru to pull off a giant-killing act and join yokozuna Akebono in a two-way lead at 10-1 in the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru slipped into a tie with yokozuna Takanohana and ozeki duo Kaio and Chiyotaikai, who all posted victories to remain one win off the pace at 9-2 with four days left of the 15-day meet at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.

Kotomitsuki, in his first career meeting against a grand champion, tore into Musashimaru at the charge and stood his ground in the prolonged mid-ring stalemate that followed.

Kotomitsuki then slipped free of Musashimaru's grip and sent him crashing to the dirt to dent the Samoan-born giant's back-to-back title hopes and boost his own chances of lifting the Emperor's Cup.

Akebono bulldozed ozeki Chiyotaikai out of the dohyo ring for another easy win and improved his chances of adding to the title he won at the Nagoya tourney in July.

Fellow grand champion Takanohana, chasing his first championship in two years, shrugged off a strong challenge from Miyabiyama at the tachi-ai before marching the ozeki out to his third straight loss.

In a battle of ozeki, Fukuoka favorite Kaio locked onto Musoyama (6-5) from the rear and tossed the Musashigawa stable wrestler out of the ring in his quest to claim the first Kyushu meet title.

Ozeki Dejima outfoxed seventh-ranked maegashira Tochinonada by jumping to the left at the face-off and quickly hauled down the Kasugano stable bruiser for the win. Both wrestlers stand at 8-3.

Sekiwake Takanonami (2-9) made light work out of Hamanoshima (2-9) as the former ozeki dished out a barrage of thrusts before dumping the No. 2 maegashira over the straw ridge.

Wakanosato (5-6), wrestling as a komusubi for the first time since making his debut in 1996, barged out sixth-ranked maegashira Tochisakae (6-5) while fellow komusubi Tochinohana was hauled down by No. 2 maegashira Higonoumi to leave both wrestlers at 3-8.

Mongolian No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan outslapped Toki (5-6) and then floored the fifth-ranked maegashira with a rear push to register only his third win of the tourney.

No. 6 maegashira Kyokutenho, also from Mongolia, slumped to his seventh defeat as 11th-ranked Kotoryu flipped the Oshima stable grappler over with an overarm throw to move to 6-5.

Lower-ranked
Kotomitsuki downs
Musashimaru

FUKUOKA, Japan (AP) - Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono and lower-ranked Kotomitsuki moved into a two-way tie for the lead at 10-1 as Kotomitsuki downed Musashimaru Wednesday with four days left in the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo tournament.

One victory behind the co-leaders at 9-2 are four wrestlers - yokozunas Takanohana and Musashimaru and ozekis (champions) Chiyotaikai and Kaio.

In the day's final bout at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, grabbed Chiyotaikai's belt tightly and bulldozed him out.

No. 9 maegashira (senior wrestler) Kotomitsuki twisted down Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, after pushing each other in the mid-ring for one minute, 37 seconds. A sumo match usually ends in 10 or 15 seconds.

In other major bouts, Takanohana fought off ozeki Miyabiyama's hand thrusts and sent him out, leaving Miyabiyama at 8-3.

Kaio threw down his fellow ozeki Musoyama at the ring's edge, handing Musoyama his fifth defeat against six victories.

Ozeki Dejima sidestepped to left in the initial charge and slapped down No. 7 maegashira Tochinonada, leaving both wrestlers at 8-3.

No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batvayar Davaa, dodged No. 5 maegashira Toki's hand thrusts skillfully and crushed him down from behind. Kyokushuzan is 3-8 and Toki 5-6.

No. 11 maegashira Kotoryu threw down No. 6 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, for his sixth victory against five defeats. Kyokutenho is 4-7.

In the 26-member juryo, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 3-ranked Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, pushed out No. 9-ranked Toyozakura for his ninth victory against two defeats. Toyozakura is 6-5.

In makushita, the top junior division, No. 23-ranked Kasugaoh (4-2), or Kim Son-tek from South Korea, slapped down No. 25-ranked Wakatenro.

No. 51-ranked Kyokutenzan (5-1), or Mongolian Enkhbat Batmunkha, threw down No. 46-ranked Munakata.

No. 56-ranked Asasekiryu (3-3), or Mongolian Badaarch Dashunyam, downed No. 54-ranked Tsujimoto with an arm throw.

In jonidan, the third highest junior division, No. 77-ranked Fudoyama (5-1), or Mongolian Nyamjuv Luvsandorj, forced out No. 80-ranked Tsurunohana.

No. 97-ranked Kitakasuga (4-2), or Mongolian Tsolmonbayar Munkhbat, threw down No. 99-ranked Bentenmaru.

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the 15-day tournament.
