NOW YOU KNOW

Legends of the fall

Bullet The Interscholastic League of Honolulu has claimed six of the eight state championships in fall sports this year. One state crown -- football -- is still up for grabs, and ILH champion St. Louis is favored to win.

Punahou secured three titles over the weekend, in girls' cross country and boys' and girls' volleyball. ILH schools St. Louis (boys' air riflery), Kamehameha (boys' cross country) and Sacred Hearts (girls' air riflery) have also won titles.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association swept the boys (Aiea) and girls (Pearl City) bowling titles.

All of the state champs have been repeat winners from last year except for the Pearl City girls in bowling and the Punahou girls in volleyball.

BACK IN THE DAY

Twenty-Three years ago this week

Bullet Kalaheo senior Steve Jenness won the Oahu Interscholastic Association cross-country championship in 16:50.4, beating his closest competitor by 17 seconds.

Jenness, who was an All-America at the University of California, now coaches the Kamehameha boys, who won their fourth consecutive state title last week.
