Richardson chooses
Santa Barbara

Star-Bulletin staff

Two-time Star-Bulletin basketball player of the year Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo has chosen to attend UC-Santa Barbara.

The 5-foot-11 senior had narrowed her choices to Hawaii, UCLA, Arizona and Santa Barbara.

"It was very difficult," Richardson said. "I made my decision Sunday night. It was hard telling the other coaches no."

Richardson made a verbal commitment Tuesday and signed a letter-of-intent last night.

"I think it's somewhere I'll be happy. Women's basketball is the No. 1 sport at that school, and everyone seems to get along well," she said.

Richardson still must qualify academically. Her GPA is high enough, but she needs a passing score on an entrance exam.

"I'm going to take an SAT prep course and the test again in December," she said.

UC-Santa Barbara was ranked in the top 10 last season before losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Gauchos finished 30-4.

State golf champ commits:

State girls golf champion Merynn Ito signed a letter-of-intent last week to attend Nebraska next fall.

Ito, a senior at Aiea, said her decision came down to Nebraska and Colorado St.

"Nebraska has really good academic facilities and good facilities for student athletes," said Ito.

Kauai senior Rachel Kyono, who won the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship in August, will attend Pepperdine next year.
