Cayetano intends
to thank Clinton
for Big Isle help

Unless Bill Clinton makes another trip to Asia, possibly to visit North Korea before he leaves office in January, today's scheduled two-hour Kona stopover will be his seventh and probably last visit to the isles as president.

Gov. Ben Cayetano and Hawaii's first lady, Vicky Cayetano, were scheduled to be at Kona Airport this afternoon to greet Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea.

Cayetano's office said last night he hopes to have a few minutes with Clinton to personally thank him for declaring the Big Island a disaster area following the record-breaking rains and flooding nearly two weeks ago.

Cayetano also wants to again voice opposition to a proposed federal plan that would designate the most remote Hawaiian Islands as a national monument, putting it off limits to fishermen.

Originally, Clinton planned to spend the weekend at the Mauna Lani Resorts on the Kohala Coast before flying to a summit with more than 20 Asia-Pacific leaders in Brunei, on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo in the South China Sea.

But personal reasons cut short the Hawaiian vacation, which was to have included a round of golf at Mauna Lani, to a refueling stop.

Thursday, Clinton will fly to Vietnam for a three-day stay, becoming the first president to visit the communist country since it unified following the war. He also will visit an MIA excavation site outside Hanoi on Saturday.
