Lookin’ good
and flyin’ high

HUI Koa'e Kea, the organization of pioneering Hawaiian Airlines DC-3 hostesses during the years 1943-53, tossed a fun bash at the Moana Hotel last Saturday to honor HAL President Paul Casey. These stews were some of the best-looking women in the islands. They included club president Peaches Riley Smith, B.J. Johnston Feldman, Queenie Ventura Dowsett, Verna Mae Mug shotGomez Perkins, Lei Ragsdale Kaniho, Renette Wright Miller, Leona Graham Auerbach, Mercy Hutchinson Bacon, club founders Abbie Funn Chong and Carol Mae Stibbard Vanderford, and party emcee Hale Kaohu Rowland. Stevenson Intermediate students of that era will remember Hale's mom, Emily Kaohu, now 96 years young, who ran the school cafeteria. At Saturday's party, some of the women sang and danced hula. Stan Kennedy Jr., HAL founder's son, flew in from Sonoma, Calif., and surprised all by dancing hula to "The Princess Pupule." The Jeff Teves Trio and Halau Hawaii entertained. Prize winners included guests Barbara Steinmiller Reeves, Janet Au Leong Holokai, Shay Auerbach and ex-UH football star Bobby Moore. Shay and Bobby, pals at Lincoln Elementary before moving on to St. Louis and Kamehameha, respectively, had eyes for these gorgeous stews when they finally learned something about girls. Shay is married to ex-stew Leona ...

MAHALO, MAHALO, MAHALO!

IN all my years at the Star-Bulletin, and I go back a long way with the paper, I have never seen the staff happier than it was on Thursday when we received word that David Black bought the newspaper.
