Lectures offer
insight into faith; churches
to hold concerts

Bullet Temple Emanu-El will inaugurate a series of educational and cultural programs with a lecture tomorrow by retired Family Court Judge Evelyn Lance.

Lance was chosen by a national law organization to help develop a legal system in Macedonia. She spent a year in the East European country, which was formerly part of Yugoslavia. She will speak about the evolving legal system in the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as well as offer insight into the status of Jewish communities in the region.

The 7 p.m. lecture at the temple, at 2550 Pali Highway, is the first of its "Second Sunday at Seven" offerings. The congregation plans to present speakers and concerts during the continuing series.

Bullet The beliefs and religious practices of Muslims will be described in a lecture tomorrow at Church of the Crossroads. The talk is the second in a series about religious pluralism and is open to the public. It will be at 9 a.m. at the church, 1212 University Ave.

The speaker will be Saleem Ahmed, a member of the Honolulu Islamic Center and former East-West Center researcher.

The adult education series will continue on Nov. 19 with a presentation on Buddhism by the Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani, retired bishop of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.

Rabbi Jennifer Gorman will describe the Jewish faith on Nov. 26.

Bullet The Lutheran Church of Honolulu will be the setting for a concert Monday by the Honolulu Brass.

"Killer B's: Beethoven, Brahms, Bernstein" is the theme of the 7:30 p.m. performance, sponsored by Chamber Music Hawaii.

Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $13 for seniors, and can be reserved by calling 543-0935.

The candlelight concert series will continue Dec. 4 with "Basically Baroque," featuring the Galliard String Quartet, Spring Wind Quintet and Honolulu Brass.

Bullet Chamber Music Hawaii will present a benefit concert of holiday music featuring the Honolulu Brass at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Christ Church in Kailua. Tickets at $15 or $25 per family are available by calling 543-0935.


Religion Calendar

California Sen. Barbara Boxer will speak about the Middle East situation and its contemporary issues, 7 p.m. tomorrow at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway.

Her lecture is part of the temple's "Second Sunday at Seven," a series presenting educational programs, cultural arts and professional and prominent speakers with diverse messages.
