Kaio saddles Dejima
with 1st loss
in Kyushu sumo

FUKUOKA, Nov. 10 (Kyodo) -- Kaio saddled fellow ozeki Dejima with his first loss of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday, leaving grand champions Musashimaru, Takanohana and ozeki Miyabiyama the unbeaten leaders in the 15-day meet.

Dejima, off to a personal-best 5-0 start, tried jumping to left at the face-off in the day's featured bout at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, but Kaio saw through the deception and threw his opponent down for his fifth straight win after an opening-day loss.

Kaio's victory leaves both ozeki tied at 5-1 and one pace behind the leaders along with yokozuna Akebono, ozeki Chiyotaikai and No. 9 maegashira Kotomitsuki.

Out in front, yokozuna Musashimaru, the defending champion in Kyushu, gave up belt control to upset-minded Hamanoshima (1-5), but took advantage of his 50-kilogram weight advantage to ease the No. 2 maegashira out of the ring.

Takanohana, meanwhile, avoided being pulled down by Higonoumi (1-5) in a scramble at mid-ring and then forced the No. 2 maegashira out of the ring as he sets his sights on ending a two-year title drought.

Akebono needed only three shoves off the face-off to expel top maegashira Wakanoyama (1-5) from the ring to stay at the heels of the leaders with a fifth win.

Ozeki Miyabiyama shoved out No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan to run his winning streak to six while the former komusubi from Mongolia slumped to his fifth loss in a row after winning on the first day.

Also, ozeki Chiyotaikai won the collision of heads with top maegashira Akinoshima (2-4) and then bulldozed the Futagoyama stable veteran out to notch a fifth win.

Musoyama, the fifth ozeki in the rankings after going 10-5 in September, caught Chiyotenzan (3-3) flat-footed at the face-off and ran the No. 3 maegashira out of the ring for his fourth win.

Hayateumi, a newcomer to sumo's third highest rank, kept the pressure on Takanonami in an all-sekiwake encounter and drove the winless former ozeki out of the ring for only his second win.

In the match-up of komusubi debutantes, Tochinohana prevailed in a prolonged exchange of thrusts and failed throws to back Wakanosato (1-5) out of the ring for a second win.

Kyokutenho, a sixth-ranked maegashira from Mongolia, nearly dragged Tosanoumi (4-2) to the ring's surface, but was eventually pulled off balance by the former sekiwake and then pushed out to a fourth loss.
