Ann still has that
girlish figure

ANN and Jack Simpson, who have 16 grandchildren, will be decked out as grandparents of a bride in tonight's French Festival Fashion Ball in Hilton's Tapa Ballroom. Ann and Jack will wear haute couture from Christian Dior. Jack said Thursday he'd rather be sitting down watching. Ann told me awhile back that when she was in high school, her mother went to Paris and bought her a Chanel dress. Ann can still get into that little Chanel number. How many grandma's of a bride can say that? ...

All hail April

"I'm excited, I didn't expect to win," said April Hail, 15, after winning "The Face of French Mug shotFestival 2001" at Chanel Waikiki Wednesday. The Punahou sophomore bested 11 other finalists ranging in age from 14 to 23. Mililani High freshman Forrest Smith, 14, won the People's Choice award. A film I want to see in Hawaii's film festival is "Sons of Hawaii," by Eddie and Myrna Kamae. It plays Thursday in the Convention Center. The documentary traces the Sons' history, going back to 1958 when legendary slack key guitarist-singer Gabby Pahinui and living legend Eddie, who sings and plays uke, formed the group. Bassist-singer Joe Marshall and steel guitarist Feet Rogers were the other founding members. Coming in later were Moe Keale, Dennis Kamakahi, Braddah Smitty Smith, George Kuo, Braddah Charlie Mahi, Pekelo Cosma, Ocean Kaowili and Paul Kim. Eddie, Smitty, Ocean and Pekelo will play music before the film in the Convention Center lobby. That's a bonus ...

The deal for Swiss Inn to be purchased and to retain the same format has collapsed. She and co-owners Martin Wyss and Sharon Fujii want to thank customers for all the lei, gifts, flowers and kind notes ...

Brittney Anelaikalani Jennings, just 13, is a falsetto singer with a clean, clear, soaring voice. She sounds like a pro. Brittney must have been on Cloud 9 last week when her idol, Genoa Keawe, attended her CD release party at the Hawaii Prince ... Chef Russell Siu tossed a grand opening party for his Kakaako Kitchen at Ward Centre last weekend to benefit St. Francis Hospice. It was also a party to release two CDs of light jazz and cocktail music by Daniel Ho and friends. The CD packages contain recipes by Siu ... The Opera Ball is next Saturday in Sheraton's ballroom. Tickets are $200. Dr. T's Big Band Hawaii plays for dancers. These guys are good ... Congratulations to all involved in last weekend's great Gridiron Show ...

Borges wins Mini-Benny 2000

Nice guy Jimmy Borges won the Mini-Benny Birthday Tourney for Wobbly Golfers and Worthy Women last week at Navy Marine with a net 66, besting Tim Smythe and Ron Ching by a stroke. Kuilima's sweet swinging Toshiko Wight was the worthiest of the Worthy Women with net 70. Don Ho was high among the leaders as was Haumea Hebenstreit, his producer. Closest to the pin on the par 3s were Roy Hiram, Danny Aiu, Smythe and Wight. Music by Mihana Souza, Phil Stephens and Van Diamond was super. Hula by Alice Clay, Gwen Frisbee and Alice Lombardo, and singing by big hitter Al Waterson, added to clubhouse fun. The party continued later at Duc's Bistro, where Mihana performs Thursdays. Guests included singer Patrice Kaohi and hula dancers Moani Gaddis, Kitty Simonds and Myra Brandt ...
