McCartney to take over at public television

Independent film producer and former state Sen. Mike McCartney is the new president and chief executive officer for Hawaii Public Television, beginning Nov. 20.

McCartney is succeeding Don Robbs, who will continue to serve the Hawaii Public Television Foundation as a communications consultant and special adviser to McCartney. McCartney will earn between $85,000 and $120,000 annually, said Neil Hannahs, chairman of the Hawaii Public Television board of directors.

McCartney was a founder of "Hawaii Stars," one of the state's longest-running locally produced television shows. He also served three terms in the state Senate and was director of the Department of Human Resources.

"Mike cares deeply about this community, is bubbling forth with ideas and has a proven track record for generating support from both the public and private sector," said Robbie Alm, a Hawaii Public Television board member.

Lunalilo ramp to stay closed during H-1 work

The Lunalilo offramp, a key access from westbound H-1 freeway into Honolulu business and shopping districts, will remain closed as the state Department of Transportation continues to retrofit the freeway through the city.

Some key detours during nighttime work, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless otherwise indicated, will be at the following locations:

Bullet The Vineyard eastbound on-ramp will be closed tomorrow and Tuesday.

Bullet The Kinau eastbound offramp will be closed tomorrow and Tuesday after 12:30 a.m.

Bullet The Punahou westbound on-ramp will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bullet Lanes will be closed on Kapiolani Interchange and near the Kinau offramp.

Daytime work will be under way except on Tuesday, usually from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the following sites:

Bullet University westbound on-ramp will be closed Monday and Wednesday after 8:30 a.m.

Bullet Lanes will be closed on the Kapiolani offramp.

Bullet Lunalilo Street lanes, shoulder and sidewalk will be closed.

Bullet Keeaumoku Street lanes and access to Lunalilo Street will be closed.

Bullet Bingham Street will be limited to local traffic.

Salvation Army needs holiday bell ringers

The Salvation Army is seeking volunteer troops for its holiday fund raising.

Church groups and other organizations can help by taking a turn ringing bells at the red-kettle collection points outside island stores. The traditional bell ringing will start Nov. 18 and continue through Dec. 23.

Money collected in the annual drive provides toys for underprivileged children, gifts for neglected senior citizens and hospital patients, and food for families.

Volunteers on Oahu may call regional Salvation Army locations: Wahiawa, 621-3030; Windward, 235-1408; Leeward, 487-1636; and downtown Honolulu, 521-6551.

Interfaith prayer service will honor organ donors

An interfaith prayer service honoring organ donors whose gifts saved or enriched the lives of transplant recipients will be held next Saturday at the annual observance of National Donor Sabbath.

The 6 p.m. candlelight ceremony at the Royal Garden Hotel in Waikiki, 440 Olohana St., will be preceded by a 3 p.m. educational seminar by the Organ Donor Center of Hawaii. Donors' families may display photographs and other remembrances as participants light a candle for each deceased donor.

Monday is the deadline for reservations to be made. Call 599-7630.

Police seek kin of man found dead off Kona

KAILUA-KONA -- Police are asking for the public's help in finding the next of kin of a man whose body was found floating in the sea near Kailua-Kona last Saturday.

The man was identified as Dennis Edward Loofbourrow, 45, also known as Allen Gates Davidson.

The circumstances of his death were suspicious, but toxicological tests are still needed to determine the cause of death, police said.

Sack 'n Save robbery suspect hunted by police

Police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed a Salt Lake Sack 'n Save store last night at approximately 11 p.m.

The suspect, who appeared to be holding a small silver handgun, allegedly jumped the customer service counter where a female clerk was counting money, police said. After failing to open a locked safe, the suspect grabbed the money the clerk had been counting and fled through the fire exit near the counter.

Police said the man fled in a dark "dualie truck," a pickup with four wheels on the back.

Accused Maui kidnapper faces Monday hearing

WAILUKU -- A Maui man accused of abducting an 8-year-old Kihei girl on Halloween in Lahaina is scheduled to face a preliminary hearing Monday in Wailuku District Court.

David True Seal, 21, of Hana has been charged with kidnapping and attempted first-degree sexual assault of the girl.

His bail was set at $40,000.

A man grabbed the girl at 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, as she was celebrating Halloween with her mother and grandmother on Front Street in Lahaina.

Maui police said the man took the girl to a secluded area near Luakini Street where he was disrobing her when another man yelled at him and the abductor fled and jumped into the harbor.

The man was arrested naked and hanging onto a buoy outside the entrance of the harbor at about 8:30 p.m.

Woman arrested in suspected assault

Police arrested a woman who allegedly assaulted another woman at her Kapahu Street home at about 11:30 p.m. yesterday.

The victim complained of pain to her body, back and chest, police said. Police identified the suspect and arrested her on a burglary charge.

Police seek suspect in robbery, car theft

Police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed a home at gunpoint and stole one of his victim's cars.

The man entered a home at 725 Kamaile St. last night at about 8 p.m. The suspect demanded purses from four women in the home, then fled in one of their cars, police said.
