Historic jewels
on display

BACK in the days when she was Waikiki's premiere hula dancer, Beverly Noa was considered a gem. She's still in the world of gems,Mug shot but now she's manager of Chanel Fine Jewelry locally. Bev is extremely caught up with four 1930s original pieces designed and signed by Coco Chanel herself, and subsequently sold to various a-rich-tocrats around the world. Chanel of Paris is now buying back as many of these originals as possible. The four pieces at the local Chanel store, flown in just for the French Festival, are not for sale, but will be on display throughout the United States and Canada before returning to Paris. It's not being revealed who were the original buyers of the exquisite pieces, including an art deco star brooch made with diamonds, but the names Vanderbilt and Rockefeller are good guesses ...

BY the time Christian Veillet heard about the French Festival, it was too late to book a venue for the a cappella vocal ensemble he heads, the Waimea Consort. But wanting to do something for the community, Veillet and his Consort booked their own airfare to Honolulu and will perform "Eight Centuries of French Vocal Music" in a free concert tonight at St. Andrew's. Incidentally, when Veillet isn't directing the Waimea Consort, he's senior resident astronomer at Canada France Hawaii Telescope on the Big Island ...

Vote and tote

MAKE sure you cast your vote before you cast your fate to the winds at Restaurant Row on Tuesday. That's when Vintners in Paradise will take place, where you can sample up to 140 wines -- bring a designated driver, too, because it'll be a shotgun start. Those attending the event will ante up $45 and be dispatched to one of four participating restaurants, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Baci, Sansei or Sunset Grill. You can meet some of the winemakers who'll be here and even keep the commemorative wine glass you'll be provided. Yes, each of the restaurants will be serving up samplings of their fare to go with the vino, so eat and drink hearty ...

HAVING agreed to direct "Brigadoon," the musical set in Scotland, Eden Lee Murray was determined to get things right. She lined up traditional bagpipers, got Celtic dance expert Annette Johansson to work with the cast and to make sure the Scottish accents are correct, brought in Alex Pratt, who's been involved in nine different productions of "Brigadoon." And do you remember who sang and danced and played the role of the handsome, superbly coiffed youth in the film version of the musical? Why, none other than a young (and hairy) Sean Connery, before he became fully Bonded ...

UH scores again

WE'RE not talking football here, but the UH students who've participated in Disney's "Imagi-Nations Design Competition" have scored incredibly well. In the last eight years in which the UH competed with colleges nationwide, the team placed seven times. None did better than this year's twosome of Stephen Crowell and Reinhardt Krekow, who won first place. The two master of fine arts candidates created something called "Origins," described as an "interactive theme park, resort and hotel designed to educate as well as entertain." It also uses the World Wide Web and CD-ROM technology. A quartet of UH architecture students, Joon Ho Chai, Margaret Innes, Jenisee Miyamoto and Sochet Vitou Tang, finished third in the Disney competition ...
