‘Slices’ of Iona Pear

Iona Pear Dance Theatre presents "Fresh Slices," the second annual concert by company members, 8 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Tenney Theatre, St. Andrew's Cathedral.

Among the works are "Ontop the ocean spiraling into oblivion, sink, drown, reborn again, Breath," a new solo work danced by Sami L.A. Akuna, exploring the interconnectedness of human beings.

Akuna also collaborates with Summer Partlon to present "Trip Away," an excerpt from "Snow White and the Seven Ravers," featuring a beautiful heroine, at least one evil queen, revenge and a lot of gender bending.

Meanwhile, David DeBlieck will explore the mysterious and divine through "Visitation," one part sacred ritual, one part Disney glamour.

Tickets are $12 general; $10 for students and seniors. Call 262-0110 for reservations or information.

Learn to make the parol, a star-shaped Christmas
lantern, at Hawaii's Plantation Village Saturday.

A star for the holidays

Hawaii's Plantation Village will host a one-day workshop Saturday on making parol, a star-shaped lantern traditionally used in the Philippines to celebrate Christmas.

The lantern is made in the shape of a star, symbolizing the lone star that guided The Three Wise Men to the stable where Jesus was born.

Offered will be easy-to-follow instructions on how to create a star using bamboo, paper or cloth embellished with any type of decoration. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kits may be purchased for $15 for assembly during the workshop. Participants may bring a brown bag lunch.

For those who are craft-impaired, readymade parols will be available for $20 each.

The workshop is an annual fund-raising activity for the Filipino Heritage Group at the village. For more information, call 677-0110.

Hawaii's Plantation Village is at 94-695 Waipahu St.
