Bullet OIA volleyball teams clinch state berths

Five football teams clinched state tournament berths over the weekend -- joining Waimea, which clinched Oct. 20 -- leaving two remaining open slots.

Four teams -- Waianae, Kahuku, Kaimuki and Castle -- advanced to the states with first-round wins in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Tournament.

Hilo clinched the Big Island Interscholastic Federation title, and a state tournament berth, by beating Waiakea, 14-6, on Friday.

St. Louis and Maui could fill the two open slots with wins this week.

The nationally-ranked Crusaders tangle with Kamehameha Saturday at Aloha Stadium, with the Interscholastic League of Honolulu second round title on the line.

St. Louis beat Kamehameha, 31-6, on Sept. 29, to capture the first round championship.

A win Saturday would give the Crusaders their 15th straight ILH title -- and a chance to defend their state title.

A St. Louis loss to Kamehameha would force a Nov. 8 playoff between the two teams for the right to represent the ILH at states.

St. Louis won its 15th consecutive game on Friday with an 84-0 romp over Damien. Kamehameha blanked Pac-Five, 45-0. Both teams are 4-0 in the second round.

Maui pounded Lahainaluna on Saturday, 36-6, behind 119 yards and three touchdowns from running back Andrew Malafu. The Sabers are 4-0 in the second round of the Maui Interscholastic League, and the Lunas fell to 3-1. Baldwin is also 3-1.

If Maui beats Baldwin on Saturday, the Sabers are headed to the state tournament. The two teams tied when they met in the first round.

"We had too many turnovers (the first game)," Maui coach Curtis Lee said. "They ran the ball well, but we just didn't play well. We just beat ourselves."

A Maui loss to Baldwin, and a Lahainaluna win against King Kekaulike would create a three-way tie atop the MIL standings.

The tie-breaker -- how the teams fared in the first round -- would favor Maui and Lahainaluna.

Lee said his team has been working on a more balanced offensive attack the past couple weeks, in preparation for the state tournament.

"We're still progressing," Lee said. "We ran a more balanced attack this week. We threw the ball more."

The MIL champion will host the second-place OIA team in the first round of the states.

Last year, MIL-champ Baldwin upended the OIA's fourth-place team, Farrington.

Farrington's shot at a state tournament bid ended with a 21-6 loss to Kaimuki on Friday. The Bulldogs won on the strength of three touchdowns and three PATs by Justin Faimealelei.

Castle knocked off Kailua, 7-6, Thursday. Senior Kaleo Segovia scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Nolan Miranda kicked the extra point to lift the Knights to victory.

In other tournament games, Waianae cruised past Campbell, 35-0, and Kahuku downed McKinley 28-7.

Kaimuki plays Kahuku in the OIA semifinals on Friday at Aloha Stadium and Waianae battles Castle.

OIA volleyball teams
clinch state berths

The girls' volleyball state tournament will have a different look this year.

Four Oahu Interscholastic Association teams that didn't make the state tournament last year will be in this year's field after all four seeds fell in one wild day in the OIA tournament on Saturday at McKinley -- including previously unbeaten Aiea.

McKinley, Radford, Moanalua and Waianae advanced to the semifinals and secured berths in the state tournament.

On the boys' side, undefeated top seeds Pearl City and Kalaheo advanced as expected, and Roosevelt and Waipahu pulled off upsets to move on.

The OIA boys' and girls' semifinals are Thursday, with the title games Saturday.

In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Punahou girls clinched the second-round title, and will play first-round winner St. Francis for the overall league title today at 5:30 p.m. at Kamehameha. Both teams qualified for the state tournament.

The Kamehameha and Punahou boys' teams play tomorrow at 5 p.m. at St. Louis. If Punahou wins, the Buffanblu claim the second round, earn a berth in the state tournament and will battle Kamehameha again Wednesday for the overall league title.

The biggest surprise in the girls' OIA tournament on Saturday was McKinley's 0-15, 13-9, 15-7 win against Aiea.

Not only were the Tigers able to rebound from the first-game shutout, but they did it against a team that hadn't dropped a single game in the regular season.

"I didn't have to tell the (team) anything after the first game," McKinley coach Erin Coker said. "They knew what they had to do, and they just went out and did it."

McKinley barely made it into the OIA tournament -- needing help on the final day of the season.
