Wilton to sign new pact

By Pat Bigold
Star-Bulletin

University of Hawaii men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton said today he will sign a one-year contract worth minimally more than the $62,000 he received in his last contract.

Wilton, 56, is in his ninth season as head coach at Hawaii and has a 157-72 record.

His previous contract was a three-year deal and expired May 31.

Asked if he is disappointed with the shortened contract, Wilton said, "It doesn't bother me. Year by year, if they feel I'm not doing the job, it's their prerogative..."

There had been speculation of a deal even longer than three years for Wilton, who is Hawaii's winningest men's volleyball coach.

Wilton will hold his annual intrasquad scrimmage Nov. 3 at Pearl City High School.

Hayashi State Open favorite

Star-Bulletin staff

Kevin Hayashi is favored to successfully defend his title in the 54-hole Hawaii State Open golf tournament beginning tomorrow at the Hawaii Prince Course.

Hayashi is coming off a victory in the Waikoloa Open earlier this month, his third of the year. He also won the Pearl Open and the AT&T Hall of Fame Championship.

Among his immediate challengers are Brian Sasada, who won the Aloha Section PGA match and stroke play championships, host pro Tommy Hines, Casey Nakama and Beau Yokomoto, winner of the Mid-Pacific Open.

The competition in the senior flight should be equally competitive with Larry Stubblefield and Rodney Acia, who both played in the EMC Kaanapali Classic last week, among those trying to halt Dean Prince's bid for his fifth title in a row.

Christel Tomori, who played on the SBC Futures Tour this summer, is back to defend her women's crown.

The tournament is sponsored by Williams & Associates.
