St. Louis serenade

GETTING the Honolulu Boy Choir to perform at the 30th reunion of the St. Louis class of 1970 was a snap. One of those who was graduatedMug shot from St. Louis that year was Boy Choir executive director Blake Nuibe. Among those fellow classmates enjoying the choir were House Speaker Calvin Say, Steve Dung (whose late daughter Alana's fight for life was documented almost daily in the paper), Rodney Chung (who defended Xerox gunman Byran Uyesugi) and high-powered defense attorney Bob Chong. Also on hand were St. Louis president Father Alan DeLong and principal Burton Tomita. After their song and dance performance, the boys sang the St. Louis Alma Mater, and while they'd memorized it, lyric sheets were provided for the grads. Tomita, who called it "one of the best renditions of the Alma Mater" he'd heard, made Nuibe honorary admissions director for the school, in hopes that all 60-plus boys consider attending St. Louis ...

ONE song featured prominently, and with good reason, in the HBO pilot about Vietnam being filmed at Maunawili is "We Gotta Get Outta This Place." Producers of "Lessons Learned" have invited the man who made the song famous, Eric Burdon, to fly in from Kona, where he's staying with family, to visit the set ...

Massage in Manoa

BEFORE taking off for official duties on the mainland, Mrs. America, Leslie Lam, was invited to tour Malama, Mary Suiter's new Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa in Manoa. She learned she and Suiter have some things in common: Both live on the Windward side and have two kids about the same ages, and both put family ahead of all else. Lam vowed to return for a massage, joking, "I'll just phone you from the plane as we're landing and go straight there from the airport." ... Meanwhile, just a block away in the Manoa Marketplace, Stephen Tarek of Manoa Chiropractic and Sports Massage may not have Mrs. America on his client list, but has worked on such disparate types as U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and All-America everything Tom Selleck. Besides chiropractic treatments, Tarek, who has a doctorate in chiropractics, offers massage, acupuncture and something called "Active Release Technique." ...

IT'S a dog's life, rues Rip Taylor. Since his return to the mainland following his latest island respite, Taylor emceed an awards show for pets in Palm Springs. What group was presenting Taylor and the awards? Why, the "Arf-Academy," of course ... You never know when you're going to tune in a TV channel and find Dalton Tanonaka, but the ex-isle newsman is now anchoring the financial news program "Biz Asia" on CNN International ...

Eaglet?

SHE didn't become president of the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association by accident. I'm referring to Sally Harper, who as trustee of the Hawaii Library Foundation fielded a three-female team to participate in the seventh annual Links to Literacy Benefit Golf Tournament. Sly Sally dug into the Punahou fifth grade and got permission for 10-year-old Michelle Wie to get a day off from school, teaming with her and Julia Ing, founder of the Ing Learning Center, to form a team. Wie, who is a one-handicapper, believe it or not, became the star of the day when she eagled the par-5 ninth hole at Honolulu Country Club. It was the first eagle in the history of the tournament, and all three players won a weekend at the Marriott Renaissance on Kauai for Michelle's feat ...
