The Waimea Menehunes got as far as the state semifinals last year. They'll get another shot at a Hawaii High School Athletic Association football tournament title after clinching their ninth straight Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship Friday.

The Menehunes allowed a touchdown for the first time since August, but rallied to beat Kapaa, 20-7, on fourth quarter touchdowns by Ikaika Cabral and Joshua Mays.

Kapaa became the first team since Punahou on Aug. 18 to score against Waimea, ending the Menehunes' streak of 22 consecutive quarters without giving up a point.

Waimea, the first team to qualify for the states, plays the Oahu Interscholastic Association champion in the first round.

"We went in last year thinking we had nothing to lose," Waimea coach Jon Kobayashi said. "This year, we're looking at it the same way."

Last year, Waimea beat Kailua in the quarterfinals before bowing to eventual champion St. Louis.

The OIA Tournament begins Thursday, with two games at Aloha Stadium.

Top-seeded Waianae takes on Campbell at 5:05 p.m., and Kailua squares off against Windward-rival Castle at 7:35 p.m.

Kailua pounded Aiea, 34-7, Friday to secure the tournament's No. 5 seed.

Josh Uelese's string of consecutive 200-yard rushing games ended at three, as he finished with 151 yards and a score for the Surfriders. Uelese finished the regular season with 1,085 yards -- gaining 993 of those in the final five games.

Castle routed Kalani, 57-6, to earn the fourth seed. Kaleo Segovia rushed for 139 yards and scored four times, giving him 19 touchdowns for the season. Joel Botelho threw only three passes -- but completed them all for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Kahuku and McKinley meet at 5:05 p.m. in Friday's first game at Aloha Stadium, and Kaimuki and Farrington face off for the second time in a week in the nightcap.

This past Friday, Kaimuki squeezed out a 22-17 win against Farrington when the Bulldogs stopped the Governors on the game's final play.

Kaimuki defensive lineman Daniel Tautofi knocked down a pass inside the 5-yard line to seal the win.

Chanceton Mirafuentes rushed for 154 yards for the Bulldogs and Michael Rabago gained 104 yards for the Governors.

McKinley closed out the regular season Saturday with a 35-9 win against Kalaheo. Vaa Fonoti rushed for 260 yards to finish the year with 1,168 yards -- tops in the OIA.

In a regular-season game last year, Kahuku escaped with a 14-12 win against McKinley when Red Raider Aaron Francisco intercepted a pass at the goal line in the closing minutes.

The four OIA first-round winners earn berths in the state tournament. The semifinals are Nov. 3 and the title game is Nov. 10.

St. Louis and Kamehameha continued their dominance in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu on Saturday. The nationally-ranked Crusaders blasted Punahou 55-7 and Kamehameha blanked Iolani 40-0.

Kamehameha and St. Louis are 3-0 in the second round --with one more game each before a showdown Nov. 4 in the regular season finale.

Damien picked up its second win of the year against Pac-Five with a 7-6 victory Saturday.

Eight Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball teams are a step closer to a state tournament berth after advancing to the second round of the OIATournament.

There were no upsets Saturday in the opening round of the tournament, although the Moanalua boys and Waianae and Radford girls had to sweat out rally-scoring wins.

The Moanalua boys outlasted Nanakuli, 16-14, 14-16, 17-15 and the Waianae girls fought off two match points to beat Kaiser, 11-13, 15-5, 17-15. Radford topped Roosevelt, 15-9, 5-15, 15-10.

The winners of this Saturday's quarterfinal matches qualify for the state tournament.

In girls action, McKinley, Radford and Moanalua also won first-round contests.

First-year Radford coach Candace Cabrera said the Rams, who didnt make the postseason last year, have accomplished two out of three preseason goals: play up to the level of their Western Division opponents and make the playoffs.

"The third goal is to make the state tournament," Cabrera said.

To reach the Nov. 7-10 tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center, Radford must beat Kahuku on Saturday. The Red Raiders finished second in the East, and received a first-round bye.

On the boys side, Waipahu, Roosevelt and Waianae advanced, along with Moanalua -- which will face unbeaten, two-time defending OIAchampion Pearl City on Saturday.

Waianae battles East top seed Kalaheo, last seasons tournament runner-up.

The girls play at McKinley on Saturday, while the boys play at Pearl City.

There will be four games at each site, with the first at 2 p.m.
