It's about time
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

Army Corps of Engineers
Gov. Ben Cayetano wants to build a "world-class" aquarium along the
Kakaako waterfront, possibly along the point just past John Dominis
Restaurant on the Ewa side of the entrance to Kewalo Basin. Thirty
years ago, that area was mostly still a landfill. A 1970 photo above
shows how undeveloped the area was. The city's old waste incinerator
smokestack can be seen, left center.

In 1972, left, the University of Hawaii's Kewalo Laboratory for
Experimental Marine Biology opened. Beach-goers in their cars
had a clear view of Diamond Head in the background.

Eventually, the landfill was developed into the state's 38-acre
Kakaako Waterfront Park, now 10 years old.

Here is a view from the old Gold Bond Building, base of the Hawaii
Community Development Authority overseeing development in Kakaako:
Slightly to left of center along the coastline is the old incinerator, now
home to the Children's Discovery Center. In back of that is the Kewalo
lab. There are ambitious plans to add a theater, interactive water fountain
and other activities at the park. There is also talk of possibly building
a new UH medical center in the area to the right, fronting the park.
