HOUSTON -- It wasn't the kind of record University of Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang ever imagined setting.

But his five interceptions resulted in Rice University securing a 38-13 victory today in a Western Athletic Conference game at Rice Stadium.

Bandit Dan Dawson picked off three of those that resulted in three Rice touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

The victory snapped Rice's five-game losing streak and dropped Hawaii to 1-5 for the season and 1-4 in league play. In three trips to Texas this season, the Warriors went 0-3 and were outscored by a combined score of 115-41.

to a touchdown during the first quarter.

Down 28-3 at the half, Hawaii didn't score its first touchdown until the opening series of the third quarter. The defense forced Rice to punt the ball on the opening series of the second half. Chang led Hawaii on the 11-play, 64-yard scoring drive. He hit wideout Ashley Lelie on a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut Rice's advantage to 28-10.

The Warriors' defense held again and received an unexpected boost on a 49-yard punt return by Flex Armstrong. Chang missed a wide open Craig Stutzmann on a third down play, forcing the Warriors to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Eric Hannum. It was his second field goal of the game to make it 28-13 with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

Hawaii was driving again early in the fourth quarter, but Dawson fooled Chang and dropped back into coverage after faking the blitz. His interception led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Robbie Beck to put the game out of reach at 35-13.

Rice wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

The Owls took their opening drive and went 67 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown. Not only did Rice convert a fourth down to keep the drive alive, but scored on a touchdown pass from quarterback Corey Evans to wideout Gavin Boothe.

Rice's Gavin Boothe (81) loses the handle on the
football as he goes into the end zone against Hawaii
in the first quarter. Boothe fumbled into the end zone
and recovered his own fumble for a touchdown.

On the 24-yard touchdown toss, Hawaii free safety Nate Jackson stripped the ball from Boothe at the 2. It appeared outside linebacker Bronson Liana would recover it in the corner of the end zone, but the ball went between his legs and into the waiting arms of Boothe to give Rice a 7-0 lead with 8:16 left in the first quarter.

Hawaii followed that up with a nice drive that should have resulted in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Chang to Channon Harris. But on the third-down play, the ball went right through Harris' hands in the back of the end zone to set up a 30-yard field goal by Eric Hannum to cut Rice's lead to 7-3 with 4:11 left in the opening quarter.

The Owls came right back and scored again on another methodical march. Evans culminated the 14-play drive with a 19-yard run up the middle off a fake to the fullback.

The midline option plagued Hawaii last year and once again proved tough for the Warriors to handle in this game. The play gave Rice a 14-3 advantage with 12:22 left in the half.

On the ensuing series, Chang threw his second interception to set up Rice's third scoring drive. Intended for Ashley Lelie, Chang threw it right into the waiting arms of Dan Dawson, who returned it 7 yards to the Hawaii 25. Five plays later, Rice scored its third touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run by Leroy Bradley to make it 21-3 with 9:30 left in the half.

Chang continued his struggles with his fourth interception of the half to set up Rice's fourth touchdown. Dawson picked off the pass intended for Craig Stutzmann and returned it 37 yards to the Hawaii 10-yard line. Two plays later, Evans took it in from 8 yards out to give the Owls a comfortable 28-3 halftime advantage.
