Gaspar, So‘onalole
wrap up Rolex doubles

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- BYU-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar advanced to the women's singles final and teamed with Tagifano So'onalole for their second doubles crown yesterday in the Rolex National Small College Tennis Championships.

In today's singles final, Gaspar was to play Anzela Zguna of Rollins (Fla.). The BYUHstar downed Julia Roudkovskaya of Georgia College, 6-2, 6-1, in the semis.

Gaspar and So'onalole took the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Julia Roudkovskaya and Lilia Biktyakova of Georgia College.

Hawaii Pacific's Matey Pampalov was beaten in the men's singles semifinals and the HPU men's doubles team of Jan Tribler and Wojtek Bratek lost in the title match.

Pampalov lost to West Florida's Radovan Chrz, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2. Tribler and Bratek bowed to Matt Porter and Goran Stenjovski of Rollins, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2.

No. 1 HPU earns 15th win

Unbeaten Hawaii Pacific, the No. 1 NCAA Division II women's volleyball team, swept Chaminade last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

Flavia Gabinio led the Lady Sea Warriors to their eighth PacWest victory and 15th overall with match-highs of 13 kills and five service aces.

Julianne Hastert had 12 kills to pace the Silverswords (4-14, 3-7).

Seasiders trim Vulcans

All-American Vanessa Valansi and freshman Ashley Moeai led seventh-ranked BYU-Hawaii to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-10 victory over Hawaii-Hilo last night in PacWest women's volleyball at Laie.

Valansi had 15 kills and Moeai added 12 kills and three block assists for the Seasiders (11-4 overall, 7-1 PacWest).

UH-Hilo (6-12, 2-8) was led by Sara Pilgreen's 14 putaways.

Loeffler leads club pros

Bill Loeffler of Castle Rock, Colo., shot a 5-under-par 67 in yesterday's second round for a 135 total and a two-stroke lead in the Western PGA Club Professional Golf Championship at the Makena Resort on Maui.

Defending champion Jeff Freeman of La Quinta, Calif., was second after matching Loeffler's 67, and Jon Stanley of Phoenix (68) was another two shots back at 139.

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi was the leader among Hawaii golfers with a 67--145, one better than Brian Sasada of Kahului (74) and two up on Brendan Moynahan of Lanai City (72).

Hapuna's Ron Castillo (70--148) and Molokai's Scott Gileta (72--149) also made the 36-hole cut.

Garcia advances in Brazil

Top-ranked Sunny Garcia was among three Hawaii surfers who won their third-round heats yesterday in the Rio Surf International 2000 at Barra Da Tijuca, Brazil.

Garcia defeated Brazil's Leonardo Neves to advance to today's fourth round. Shane Dorian eliminated fellow islander Andy Irons, and Kalani Robb defeated Australia's Shane Powell.

Also advancing were the No. 2- and 3-rated surfers, Australians Luke Egan and Jake Paterson, with Paterson eliminating Hawaii's Shawn Sutton.

Quarterback Club meets

University of Hawaii associate head football coach George Lumpkin and offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh are among the featured speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.

Also on the dais is UH Wahine basketball coach Vince Goo.

Lunch at the hotel's International Ballroom begins at 11:30 a.m.

The program follows at noon.

The weekly event is open to the public.

Isobe helps U.S. win

Gerald Isobe of Honolulu helped lead the United States to first place in the third World Deaf Championship in Sun City, South Africa last week.

At the hilly Lost City Golf Course, Isobe shot 81, 80 and 83.

The U.S. won by 24 strokes over second-place South Africa.

Teams from England, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, and Scotland also participated.

XTERRA competition set

Last Saturday's Ironman winner Peter Reid of Canada and two-time defending champion Ned Overend headline the field of the fifth annual XTERRA World Championship tomorrow on Maui.

An estimated 400 professional and amateur athletes from around the world will compete in an off-road triathlon starting at 9 a.m.

The race is comprised of a 1.5-kilometer swim off Wailea Beach; a 30-kilometer mountain bike race from Wailea up Haleakala and down to Makena, and an 11-kilometer trail run from Makena to Wailea.

The top women's pro contenders are Kerstin Weule of Colorado and Jody Purcell of Australia.

The top prize is $11,000.
