Garcia stays on course

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia won his second round heat yesterday against Brazil's Bruno Santos to move into the third round of the Rio Surf International 2000.

Garcia, 30, is close to clinching his first Association of Surfing Professionals world title, and yesterday's win makes the prospect all the more probable.

Hawaii's Shawn Sutton and Andy Irons also won heats yesterday to advance.

Two other Hawaii surfers -- Conan Hayes, Ross Williams -- were eliminated.

Foursome win Pro-Am

Honolulu businessmen Warren Haruki, Bert Kobayashi, Gary Hogan and Mike Hartley won the two-day EMC Kaanapali Classic Pro-Am yesterday with a record 41-under par 101.

Professional Jesse Patino played with the group yesterday and Larry Ziegler was the pro in Wednesday's round.

Pro Jim Thorpe won the individual title with a 7-under par 64.

Waialua boys clinch

The Waialua boys' team secured the final Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division volleyball playoff berth Wednesday -- not Mililani, as was reported yesterday.

Both teams finished 5-5, but Waialua advances due to its victory over Mililani Sept. 30.

Wilburn in long drive

Don Wilburn, representing the Barber's Point Golf Course, advanced to the final six in the Senior World Championship Long Drive competition in Nevada yesterday.

The final will take place Saturday.

Kometani misses out

Hawaii's Pam Kometani failed to earn an LPGA Tour card yesterday in the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Pam Kometani shot an 81 yesterday for a four-round total of 300. The qualifying score was 294.

Rudosky leads at Makena

Micah Rudosky of Cortez, Colo. shot a 5-under par 67 yesterday to take a one-shot first-round lead in the Western PGA Club Professional Championship at Makena Resort's South Course.

Cortez had an adventurous round with two eagles, six birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.

Brian Sasada of Kahului, Maui shot a 72, five strokes back.

Other Hawaii participants include Scott Gileta, Doug Bohn, Ron Castillo Jr., Kirk Nelson, Kevin Hayashi and Michael Castillo.

Gaspar starts strong

Petra Gaspar of BYU-Hawaii won her opening match in the Rolex National Small College Tennis Championships in Memphis, Tenn. yesterday.

Gaspar, who is the two-time defending women's champion in singles and doubles, beat Ana Skafar 6-1, 6-1.

Gaspar teamed with BYUH teammate Tagifano So'onalole to notch two wins and move to today's doubles final.

Matey Pampalov of the Hawaii Pacific University men's team stopped Ljubic Urban, 6-3, 6-3, in the men's first round.

In doubles, HPU's Jan Tribler and Wojtek Bratek defeated Michael Judd and Jarrad Rexilius 6-2, 6-2 in a first-round match.

UH coaches at Na Koa

Coach June Jones and defensive line coach Vantz Singletary will be featured speakers at the Na Koa Football Club's luncheon meeting Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center Hospitality Room.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting at noon. Cost is $10 for Na Koa members and $15 for nonmembers. Parking fees will be refunded with validation.

Netters going to nationals

The Pearl Harbor Netters will compete in the USA League Tennis 3.5 Senior National Championships Oct. 26-29 at San Diego.

Team members are Kiyoshi Matsuo, Larry Mun, Richard Chanslor, Les Ihara, Alvin Kogachi, Vince Vassallo, Benny Carlos and Roy Naito.
