Mutual Publishing is the leader with 17 awards, followed by the University of HawaI'i Press with 13.
University of Hawai'i Press' awards include the coveted Samuel Manaikalani Kamakau Award for Best Hawai'i Book of the Year, which goes to "Pana O'ahu: Sacred Stones, Sacred Land," edited and compiled with photographs by Jan Becket and Joseph Singer, with contributions by Kehaunani Cachola-Abad, J. The other major citation is the John Dominis Holt Award for an individual who best exemplified the art and craft of book publishing in Hawaii. This year the Holt award is given posthumously to George Kanahele, educator, author and Hawaiiana booster."George was one of the islands' own; I adored him," said publisher and distributor Maile Meyer of Native Books. "He not only put the islands' point of view into publishing, he raised it to the level of scholarship.
"He not only met standards across the board, he raised the standards for the rest of us."
