Hochstedler
out to sea

IT'S the kind of thing that sends shudders down the backs of superstitious theater folks. Gwen Verdon, who created the role ofMug shot Roxie in the original "Chicago" on Broadway 25 years ago, died in her sleep at about the same time the show, created by her late husband, Bob Fosse, had its opening night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. It was one of many shows that helped make Verdon a Broadway legend and winner of four Tony awards. Chatting with Jim Nabors during intermission at "Chicago," he recalled seeing Verdon do the show on Broadway back in '75 ... Darren Hochstedler takes off tomorrow to meet the ms Patriot, the new Interisland cruise ship. He's going to be entertainment supervisor for the ship, and would seem to be the perfect choice, given his extensive creative, musical and technical talents long on view before many audiences in Honolulu theater. And if the pianist should get sick, he can fill in there as well. His many pals join in wishing him Bon Voyage. And, of course, keep them in mind when hiring talent ...

YOU'LL not likely see Katia Skanavi on the ms Patriot, but you can catch the youthful Russian pianist perform Sunday at 4 p.m. at Orvis Auditorium. She was a finalist in the 1997 Van Cliburn Competition and while she's studied in both Paris and Moscow, Katia now resides in -- Cleveland? Anyway, for ticket info call Peter Coraggio at 946-6151 ...

Baywatchers clean up

THOSE "Baywatch Hawaii" hard-bodies who stay in shape through workouts at the Honolulu Club are wrapping another season. Club members told membership director Janice Bruggemeier that they wanted to bid aloha to the cast by getting together for a joint community service project. A beach clean up seemed a natural, so clubbers decided to make it a fund-raiser for the Surfrider Foundation and take on the filthy Army beach across from Dillingham Air Field. "Baywatch" babes Brande Roderick and Stacy Kamano were joined by Michael Bergin and Charlie Brumbley and in an hour flat, had the beach fully scoured. Bergin's mom, Lorraine, also pitched in and about 1,000 pounds of trash was removed. Now Matson Navigation has stepped up with another $2,000 for Surfrider ...

THERE'LL soon be an addition to the STAR 101.9 morning show family. No, Hudson isn't pregnant -- I don't think. But her co-host on the show, Scotty B, is expecting a new baby "B" in April. He and wife Angie already have two sons, Tommy and Brandon, 10 years apart. Now they're in a hurry? ... Magic 2000: Magician Carlos da Silva II isn't one of those rabbit- out-of-the-hat guys, as those who catch him Nov. 5 in Farrington High's "Magic & Comedy Blast" will see. No, he produces his rabbit, Elvis, from a pan of fire. Would you call it a hare-raising experience? ...

School daze

ONCE in a while, a film will come along with which you personally connect. Perhaps it takes place in the same town where you grew up. Well, in the household of Star-Bulletin sports editor Cindy Luis, both she and her husband have come across films in recent days with a personal attachment. First they saw "Almost Famous," and Cindy recalled she and Cameron Crowe were classmates and staff writers at the University of San Diego. Then hubby Jay Wells pointed out in the jock film "Remember the Titans," that he was graduated from T.C. Williams the year before they won the football title. Anybody done a movie about Keokuk lately? ...
