Tournament still
a goal after defeat

TULSA, Okla. - A season that was full of great expectations for the University of Hawaii Wahine soccer team is down to two "must-win" matches.

Julie Davidson floated a 30-yard free kick over Demarre Sanchez's hands and under the crossbar for the difference at 87:10 yesterday as the University of Tulsa edged UH, 4-3, in a Western Athletic Conference match.

The Wahine are 1-3-1 with three points in the WAC standings and in serious jeopardy of not qualifying for the WAC tournament.

San Jose State has five points and one home match left against Fresno State on Friday.

FSU, Texas-El Paso and Texas Christian all have six points.

Tulsa travels to UTEP on Sunday. The Wahine host TCU Thursday.

In case of a tie in the standings, the Wahine do not have the head-to-head advantage over either UTEP or Tulsa, making a win against TCU mandatory.

If the Wahine still have a chance for the tournament after Thursday, they host league leader Southern Methodist on Sunday.

Hawaii (0-7 on the road in 2000) scored early when Megan Lytle connected on a direct free kick.

The Golden Hurricane responded with goals by Kelly Noonan and Beth Taruscio midway through the first half and took a 3-1 lead on Noonan's second goal at 52:33.

The Wahine battled back on goals by Veronica Flores (66:31) and Arlene Devitt (72:00).

However, Carmel Hurley got a red card at 72:13 leaving UH short a player the rest of the way.

"There was no foul for the (Davidson's) free kick and no foul when Carmel was thrown out," UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.

"We played well today. We dominated possession in the area of the field where one plays.

"The game consists of 90 minutes. Sometimes we tend to forget that, but I'm not making excuses."

The match was played on a wet field that had been used for a men's match earlier in the day.

The Wahine face the Oral Roberts Eagles today in a nonconference match in Tulsa.
