Buyers back
to Princeton

IT'S sort of a command performance, but one that C. Brewer chairman Doc Buyers will happily attend. He and wife Elizabeth Lindsey willMug shot fly back to Princeton for the Oct. 21 dedication of Buyers Hall. Also donning orange and black attire to appear with Buyers at the ceremony will be his longtime pal Dick Kazmaier, the '51 Heisman trophy winner, Dave Hickok, his roommate and team captain who went on to be a top surgeon in Minneapolis, and John McGillicuddy, who was chairman of the board of both Manufacturer's Hanover and Chemical Bank in New York. These four good Princetonians went off in different directions to pursue their career goals ...

LAST month, U.S. News & World Report ranked Princeton the No. 1 school in the nation, and on Oct. 20 the school will celebrate its successful Capital Funds Drive, which raised more than $1 billion for the first time ever. Among those speaking at the seminars attendant to the celebration will be such alumni as Charlie Gibson of "Good Morning America" and Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com, who was Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1999. And, of course, all those in attendance that weekend, including Doc and Elizabeth, will be taking in the Princeton/Harvard game at the new Princeton Stadium that Saturday ...

Chicago meets 'Chicago'

STRICTLY by happenstance I was dining at Ruth's Chris Steak House on the first night the two leading ladies of "Chicago" arrived in town and, in true Midwestern fashion, went for beef at Ruth's. The two were amazed to learn my date was from Chicago -- "No way!" they said as one. The two young women, Tonya Wathen, who plays Roxie, and Heather Parcells, who's Velma in the musical, have been to the Windy City but never lived there. Tonya, in fact, revealed she's originally from Dayton, Ohio, and had never eaten spinach, so G.M. Al Hosoi made sure her meal included Ruth's signature creamed spinach. We may never know for sure if she liked it, however, as she took much of it in a doggie bag back to her hotel. The musical opens Tuesday at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tonya should be the one with the new muscles ...

IF you don't think singer Jimmy Borges is a real show-must-go-on kind of guy, read on. He'd agreed to entertain the senior citizens living at One Kalakaua (ironic, since Jimmy just turned 65) and when his piano accompanist failed to show, Jimmy simply continued on with an hour of a capella songs which charmed the audience ... That art sale fund-raiser for Rehab Hospital of the Pacific raised nearly $5,000 from sales of 26 paintings by those overcoming physical challenges and learning to live creatively with their disabilities. The money will help buy more brushes, canvases and art supplies ...

Loyal, or disloyal?

SACRED Hearts is having its fifth annual scholarship gala tomorrow at the Sheraton Waikiki and alumnae Loyal Garner and Nohelani Cypriano are being honored for contributions to the community. This, despite the much-traveled tale of how Loyal and three classmates were selected to perform at the first St. Louis Homecoming Talent Show. Class advisor Sister Mary Dolorine wasn't happy with the song they'd chosen to sing, "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening," and suggested they do "Pupu Hinohino" instead. But the evening came and Loyal and her co-conspirators sang their song anyway and took first place. Sister Mary was proud ...
