Students want more
voices on UH board

A group of University of Hawaii student leaders is calling for the Board of Regents to reconsider appointments to the advisory board whose job is to help select the next president for the university.

Mamo Kim, Graduate Student Organization president, said the number of student representatives should be increased on the 17-member committee. Three students were named to represent the university's 60,000 students.

Kim said regents Chairwoman Lily Yao should not have been the sole person to select committee members. The selection process was "corrupt and compromised" and violated the spirit of Hawaii's sunshine law that calls for community access, she said.

However, David Iha, board secretary, said the rules state clearly that Yao, being the chairwoman, was designated with the selection power. Besides, the call for community involvement was discussed in a public meeting in June, and the board solicited public input for the committee before making the appointments, he said.

The board has no plans to reconsider the appointments, Iha said. Kim and others staged a protest yesterday at the Manoa campus. But Kim said the students have no plans to try to force the board to reconsider.

The 17 members were chosen from 73 individuals who either applied to or were nominated to the board, Iha said. The members include four regents, three students, three faculty members, three university administrators and five persons from the community at large.

The advisory committee will review all applicants interested in replacing Kenneth Mortimer who announced earlier this year that he will leave the job next June. The committee is to create a nonranked list of at least five semifinalists.
