LAFITENIA, ST. JEAN DE LUZ, France -- Hawaii's Michael Ho won the grand masters (43-and-over) division in the Quiksilver Masters surf contest in France yesterday.

Ho defeated four-time world champion Mark Richards in the final.

Gary Elkerton won the masters title with a victory over three-time world champion Tom Curren.

HPU wins 11th in row

Hawaii Pacific University ran its women's volleyball winning streak to 11 matches by beating Western Oregon, 15-4, 15-8, 15-7, yesterday in Monmouth, Ore.

HPU (11-0 overall, 4-0 PacWest) is the top-ranked team nationally in Division II.

Susy Garbelotti had match-highs of 14 kills and 18 digs for the Sea Warriors, while teammates Debbie SantAnna and Fluvial Gabinio each had 12 kills.

Kym Rohman led Western Oregon (5-9, 3-5) with 10 kills.

BYUH women roll

Vanessa Valansi's 21 kills and 13 digs helped the Brigham Young University women's volleyball team beat Humboldt State, 15-6, 15-9, 15-5, in Arcata, Calif., yesterday.

Telenia Leota chipped in for BYUH (7-4 overall, 3-1 PacWest) with 32 assists and 10 digs.

Joella Schlepan led Humboldt State (1-14, 1-7) with 11 kills.

Sea Warriors rattle Vikings

Hawaii Pacific University nipped Western Washington, 1-0, in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer game yesterday in Bellingham, Wash.

HPU (6-3-1 overall, 2-2-0 PacWest) forward Darren Juliano scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute.

Frederick Andreasson had six saves and recorded his league-leading fourth shutout.

The host Vikings (6-5-0, 1-1-0) played the final 35 minutes with a one-man advantage.

Seasiders fall on road

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 game to Simon Fraser yesterday in PacWest men's soccer at Burnaby, B.C.

Jones, Morrison at Na Koa

University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison are the featured speakers for Monday's Na Koa Football Club meeting.

The public is invited to attend the 11:30 a.m. lunch at the Stan Sheriff Center's Arena hospitality room.

Jones and Morrison will review the TCU game with film clips. They'll also talk about the upcoming home game against SMU on Oct. 14.

Charity golf benefits surf

Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill will hold the third annual Charity Swing Golf Tournament at The Links at Kuilima Golf Course on Oct. 25.

This year's tournament will benefit the National Scholastic Surfing Association.

The entry fee is $110 per person for the four-person team event. Entry fees include green and cart fee, a boxed lunch, a polo shirt and an awards banquet.

Terry Fox run Oct. 21

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is hosting the 11th Annual Terry Fox Cancer Research Benefit on Oct. 21.

The 10K run and the 5K walk is scheduled for 7 a.m. with a dinner gala and silent auction at night.

All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society Maui, Molokai, and Lanai Unit and The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.

Movie star Jim Belushi is the headliner for the 6:30 p.m. dinner gala.

The race fee is $25, and tickets for the dinner cost $125 per person.

A fund-raiser golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 14. The fee is $100 per person.

In 1980, Terry Fox, having lost a leg to cancer, ran across a large portion of Canada on an artificial leg in hopes of raising awareness and funds for cancer research. He passed away in 1981.

Tennis team to nationals

Kazu's Electrical Live Wires, a women's tennis team from Oahu will compete, will compete in the USA League Tennis 3.0 Senior National Championships from Oct. 12-15 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Team members are Cissy Chow, Lorraine Fujitani, Valerie Nagaji, Karen Nose, Jennie Ohta, Wendy Sanemitsu, Edith Tomei, Gerri Yoshida, Dale Daida, Donna Matsushima and captain Gaye Fujimoto.
