Moiliili extends
invitation to
neighborhood party

The small community of Moiliili invites the larger world to see what this diverse neighborhood has to offer at the fifth annual Discover Moiliili Festival on Saturday.

The day's events begin at 9 a.m. at Stadium Park with taiko drums and the Royal Hawaiian Band. Until 3 p.m. the park will be open to a bake sale, farmers' market, country market and food booths, plus craft sales, demos and workshops. There will also be games for kids, balloon sculpting, clowns and face-painting.

At 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., spooky guy Glen Grant presents ghost tales of Moiliili in the pavilion.

At 11:15 a.m., Lopaka Kapanui tells scary stories for kids. At 5:30 p.m., Grant hosts "Scare Your Socks Off," a story-telling competition, to be followed by a Japanese obake movie, "Kwaidan."

Admission is free, except for the story-telling, which costs 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for kids. Other ways to spend money: Buy a souvenir T-shirt for $12 or a "Tastes & Tales of Moiliili" cookbook for $14.95.

The festival benefits the Moiliili Community Center.

Parking is available at Kuhio Elementary School and the Japanese Cultural Center, with a free shuttle running to Stadium Park all day.
