‘Monday’ snoozer
to marinara

NOW that we can watch "Monday Night Football" live, we get stuck with a boring game -- Seahawks and Chiefs. Almost makes me wish the Olympics weren't over.

Remember, I said almost.

Athlon picks Hawaii to finish seventh in the WAC basketball wars this winter. But our Mole in Manoa says Rainbows' freshman center Haim Shimonovic (6-10, 245) is tearing it up in informal workouts. Only 11 more shopping days 'till Midnight Ohana.

It's always heartening when a small school enjoys unprecedented success. Yes, St. Francis needed some help in order to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's first-round volleyball championship, since it lost to Punahou. (The Buffanblu were upset by Iolani and Kamehameha over the weekend.)

But the Troubadours certainly earned the school's first state tournament berth in any sport, going 10-1 in a tough league.

How good would Pesefea Fiaseu look in a Hawaii uniform next fall? The St. Louis running back doesn't need much blocking to get loose, and we've yet to see him be pushed back by less than three defenders.

He's also an outstanding student and leader. As St. Louis student body president, he spent last week organizing the school's homecoming festivities in addition to getting himself ready for the Crusaders' biggest game of the season to date.

David Wells isn't even close to Pedro Martinez for the Cy Young Award. Martinez is so much better than anyone else this year, he should probably get the Most Valuable Player Award, too.

The biggest question for the first round of the playoffs seems to be if the Yankees -- with seven straight losses -- can regain enough momentum to derail the red-hot A's.

My guess is yes. The Yankees have been there many times before, and know what needs to be done.

Mets over Giants and Braves edging the Cardinals in the National League. In the American, Mariners over White Sox and Yankees beating the A's.

After the Yankees sweep the Mariners and the Braves slip by the Mets ... you guessed it ... Yankees over Braves. This all seems so familiar.

Does anyone really believe the University of Hawaii volleyball team will lose a WAC match this season?

All the Wahine have to worry about is staying sharp and not peaking before December -- and then it's on to Richmond.

Timmy Chang fell just a bit short in making it a trifecta for former St. Louis School quarterbacks on Saturday. Jason Gesser (Washington State) and Darnell Arceneaux (Utah) both quarterbacked their teams to victories.

Yes, Brian Viloria may have been robbed by the faulty computerized judging system in his second-round Olympic boxing loss.

But it should be remembered that the same could be said of Viloria's first-round opponent. With a normal judging system, Viloria could have easily lost that fight, in which he faded toward the end and became passive.

How about just scrapping the whole lousy system and starting over?

The best thing to come out of the Olympics was this line by ESPN's Kenny Mayne:

"Tommy Lasorda underwent a drug test and tested positive for marinara."

And we didn't have to wait an extra day for it.
