Wahine climb
to 11-0

From staff and wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. -- The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team cruised to 11-0 yesterday, winning its Western Athletic Conference opener, 15-5, 15-4 , 15-10, at Fresno State.

Lily Kahumoku had 15 kills to lead the No. 2-ranked Wahine while Jessica Sudduth added 11.

Kahumoku hit .462 with two aces, three digs and a block. Sudduth hit .474.

Veronica Lima had nine kills while Maja Gustin added seven kills and a match-high seven total blocks.

"They matched sideouts with us for a while, but they couldn't keep it up," said head coach Dave Shoji. "They played very good for a while."

Shauna McQuaid led the Bulldogs (7-8, 0-1) with nine kills and two blocks.

Today (4:30 p.m. HST), UH may have a more difficult task in stopping San Jose State's Joslynn Gallop, who is leading the WAC in kills with a 5.73 average. The Spartans (10-4, 1-0) defeated Nevada last night, 3-2.

"We have to slow her down," Shoji said of Gallop. "I don't think we can stop her completely but we have to slow her down. We'll keep two people in front of her all the time. A lot of it will be Jessica and Lily trying to double up on Gallop."

The Wahine will return tomorrow and prepare for Thursday's match with Southern Methodist at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Next Saturday, Hawaii will host Texas Christian.
