Courtney leads
the band again

EYES were moist when Del Courtney was helped to the Royal's Monarch Room stage last Mug shotSunday and conducted his old orchestra to end a smashing "tea dance" in honor of his 90th birthday. In a strong, clear voice he thanked the crowd for coming, signing off just as he did years ago when he was holding the dances. Then Gabe Baltazar led the band in "Aloha Oe" as the crowd sang along. Man, what a chicken-skin finish. The affair, which packed the room, was outstanding. Emcee Jimmy Borges was at his best, calling up singer after singer. Among them was Herb Jefferies, who turned 89 the same day. Herb looks and sounds good ...

Hole in one has Adi soaring

ADI Kohler, 64, was still in the clouds last Saturday at the Chaine des Rotisseurs' lavish dinner at the Kahala Mandarin because two days prior he fired his first hole in one. Adi retired as Mauna Kea Resort's managing director in July. He scored the ace on Mauna Kea's signature 180-yard No. 3 hole across the water, using a 3-wood. "I yelled louder than I've ever yelled in my life," he said. Adi was playing with Dr. Charley Campbell and Steve Bass ...

Mandarin G.M. Jan Goessing can be proud of his food and beverage team: Wayne Hirabayashi, Wayne Woods, Cameron Heen and George Moniz. They had their hands full Saturday and came through like champs. They had to please gourmets at the Chaine dinner and they also handled a 40th reunion banquet for Radford High's class of 1960, the school's first graduating class. Tom Moffatt was deejay for the reunion. Tom didn't have a choice. His wife, "Sweetie," is a class member and reunion organizer, along with Ellen Pelissero, Doug Kinley, Jim Nyfeler, Jack Padua and nancy ortiz ...

BAYWATCHERS Greg Bonnan, Michael Bergin and Stacy kamano were among 500 people at Honolulu Club's 20th year party last Saturday. G.M David Schell and staff came up with the "Saturday Night Fever" disco theme. Food was provided by Padovani's, A Pacific Cafe, Superb Sushi, Sansei, Dixie Grill, Auntie Pasto's, Chiang Mai and Brew Moon. A silent auction raised $4,000 for the Junior Lifeguard Association ...

KATHY Foy sang, Vicky Holt Takamine danced hula and Althea Train played piano at a post-symphony concert party at the penthouse of Robert Carpenter and Dr. Garrett Saikley Sunday. The Gold Coast apartment of 5,000 square feet is for sale. If you have $6.95 million and are looking for a "pad," give Anne Hogan Perry a buzz at Coldwell Banker. A studio apartment and a Mercedes sports car are part of the package. Vicky was part of Byron Yasui's fine "Loihi," performed earlier Sunday by the symphony. A Catered Experience catered ...

Chamberlain likes Prosperity

ACTOR Richard Chamberlain walked into Prosperity Corner with a group recently to buy incense. The store has 120 brands of incense, says owner D.J. Colbert. She said the actor was "extremely gracious" and that he bought a good supply of bayberry incense. D.J. said her staff also prepared "bruise in the bottle," artificial blood and grime for Tia Leone to use in "Jurassic Park III" filming here as her character was in a plane crash ... Shari Lynn, with keyboarder Ray Katayama, sang at the men's formalwear showing at Neiman's Thursday. Doug Lum's crew served pupu and wine. The piece de resistance in Neiman's annual Christmas Book is a 118-foot submarine. It sleeps 11 and has a range of 3,000 miles. It's yours for a cool $20 million ...
