Mass exodus
from PacWest
stuns isle schools

Staff and wire reports

Hawaii's four NCAA Division II schools were surprised to learn this week that 10 other schools are leaving the Pacific West Conference.

The departures at the end of the school year would leave the conference with six members -- Hawaii-Hilo, BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific, Western New Mexico and Montana State-Billings.

The schools that earlier this week announced their intention to leave are Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska-Fairbanks, Central Washington, Humboldt State, Northwest Nazarene, St. Martin's, Seattle, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

BYU-Hawaii athletic director Randy Day said yesterday that the Hawaii schools and conference officials were shocked by the announcement.

PacWest officials are scheduled to meet with the athletic directors of all current 16 conference schools Monday in Seattle.

Dorian, Sutton advance

Shane Dorian rallied in the final 10 minutes of surfing to edge Kelly Slater, 22.6-22.4 in the second round of the Billabong Pro at San Clemente, Calif., yesterday.

Just when Slater appeared in control, Dorian caught one of the biggest waves of the day and scored an 8.5 out of a possible 10.

Shawn Sutton of Hawaii ousted Brazil's Victor Ribas, but Ross Williams lost to Ben Bourgeois of North Carolina.

Dorian and Sutton join current Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Leader Sunny Garcia in round three today.
