Dr. Carl B. Mason, who took part in the first open-heart surgery in Hawaii, died last Thursday in Palo Alto, Calif. He was 76.

Having joined the open-heart surgery team of Queen's Hospital in 1958, he was on hand for the Dec. 2, 1959, first here, on a team led by Dr. Scott Brainard that performed the historic operation. He remained on the team until 1976.

The San Diego-born Mason graduated in 1953 from the school of medicine of Stanford University, moving to Queen's to begin his residency the same year. He had served as a Navy pharmacist's mate in World War II.

The years 1969 to 1976 found Mason an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Hawaii school of medicine.

Also, he served as assistant chief of surgery and later assistant chief of thoracic surgery at Queen's.

A founding member of the American Trauma Society, he was active in civic endeavors and professional organizations. He served on boards of Kuakini Hospital and the Salvation Army. Also, he volunteered to be physician for Roosevelt High School's football team. He moved his practice to Napa, Calif., in 1976.

Dr. Mason is survived by wife Jean; son Michael; daughters Lynn Haia and Jeanne Chasey; and six grandchildren.

Honolulu memorial services are pending. Donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Hawaii Chapter.


Cesario B. Cadavona, 75, of Makaweli, Kauai, an irrigator for Gay and Robinson, died Friday in Kauai Veterans Hospital. He was born in the Philippines. He is survived by wife Carmen; daughter Mila Yamaoka; sons Albert and Roland; sisters Andriana Reyes and Perfectua Cadavona; brother Philomeno, and six grandchildren. Asta N. Chinen, 79, of Wahiawa died Saturday. She was born in Ask, Denmark. She is survived by sons Robert Jr. and Fritz Chinen and Clemens Pedersen; daughter Margrethe Chinen-Klieber, and three grandchildren. George T. Correa, 83, of Las Vegas, formerly of Honolulu, died Sept. 17 in Las Vegas. He was born in Waialua. He is survived by sister Rita Kilgallen. Private services.

Henry Costa Jr., 71, of Kailua, a retired dairyman and owner of Henry Costa Dairy, died Monday in Honolulu. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by mother Lola; daughters Sharon Sheehan, Ann Nadean Trujillo, Joan Rodriguez, Jean Blank and Marcella Costa; brothers Frank, David and Gabriel, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Reginald J.Y. Dang, 73, of Honolulu, a retired truck driver for Alaska Teamsters Union, died Sept. 19. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by sons Russell and Michael; daughters Debra Hooper and Geniel Sanft; brothers Gordon and Patrick; sisters Ruth Lee and Sydney Yuen, and nine grandchildren. Private services.

David R. Feliciano, 51, of Concord, Calif., a salesman, died last Thursday at home. He was born on Oahu. He is survived by daughters Sky Feliciano, Carla Sans and Stacy Baird; son Wade Baird; brothers Richard, James, Donald, Gavin, Clifford and John; sisters Davilyn Payne, Joan Feliciano and Laurel Reid; mother Olive, and four grandchildren. Johnette B. Higa, also known as Johnette B. Santiago, 39, of Pearl City and Hawley, Texas, a retired major for the Army National Guard, died Sept. 16. She was born in Honolulu. She is survived by husband Jesse; daughters Jolene and Jessica; parents John and Helen Santiago; brothers John, Glenn, Don, Steven and Paul Santiago, and sisters Linda Malaki, Raynette Daite and Gloria Sua. Aguida Juan, 89, of Kealia, Kauai, died Friday in Wilcox Memorial Hospital. She was born in the Philippines. Helen H. Kealoha, 88, of Wailuku, a retired tour guide, died Saturday in Hale Makua. She was born in Paia, Maui. Yoshio Yamauchi, 86, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Honolulu, a retired television repairman, died Sept. 20. He was born in Koloa, Kauai. He is survived by wife Shizue; son Colin; daughters Carol Tong, May Gushiken, Natalie Le Beau and Iris Yamauchi; brother Dr. Shoyei, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
