The Big Games

FOOTBALL:

The scuttlebutt this season from some corners is that nationally ranked St. Louis is not as good as last year. But as the Crusaders' game against Kamehameha draws near (7:45 p.m. kickoff, Friday at Aloha Stadium), St. Louis sports information director Georges Gilbert provides some numbers to dispel that notion.

The most noteworthy comparison is the Crusaders averaged 504.3 yards and 51.2 points per game at this point in 1999, and 478 yards and 49.8 points this season. The difference is more than made up by the fact that four of St. Louis' six games have been shortened by the new mercy rule.

At any rate, Kamehameha has looked just as dominant as St. Louis so far this season.

See team standings on this page for times and sites of this weekend's other games.

CROSS COUNTRY:

Some of Hawaii's top runners will find how they match up with top mainland competition at Saturday's Iolani Cross Country Invitational (9:30 a.m. start, Kualoa Ranch).

Annie Kawasaki and Chrystal Cuadra (Pac-Five), Ashley Swart (Kaiser), Aala Lyman (Kamehameha) and Pippa Macdonald and Lynn Kamimoto (Punahou) match strides with California state champion Sara Bei (Montgomery).

Top boys including Todd Iacovelli (Punahou), Justin Peterson (Kamehameha) and Andrew Kamikawa and Jeff Lim (Mililani) will see where they stand with California state champ Kevin Davis (Clovis West).

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS RADIO SHOW EXTENDS

Hawaii Sports Talk, in association with Hawaii Sports Journal, has added a half-hour to its weekly high school sports radio talk show. The show, hosted by Barry Villamil and Randy Miyamoto, airs Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on KCCN (1420). ... The Waianae football team is ranked 11th in the Pacific Region by Highwired Sports, and the Punahou girls' volleyball team is nationally ranked at No. 25 by Highwired and No. 10 by Fox. ... Iolani alumnus Wes Nakama of the Contra Costa Times covered De La Salle's classic 31-28 football victory over Mater Dei last Friday in Anaheim, Calif., as the Spartans' record streak extended to 103 wins. Nakama said the game had parallels to Iolani and Waianae's 7-all tie in the 1980 Prep Bowl. "Waianae was the powerhouse team and considered a heavy favorite, but Iolani had a chance to win it with under two minutes left." ... St. Louis football rankings watch: Rivals.com, 7th to 5th; Schoolsports.com (ESPN), 7th to 6th, Butkus, stayed at 7th; Fox, stayed at 7th; USA Today, stayed at 12th.
