Who Wants To Be A Politician?

Senate District 24

Kaneohe, Enchanted Lake

*Denotes incumbent

Bob Hogue

REPUBLICAN
Age: 47
Job:
Broadcaster/writer
Years here:
12

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

For 23 years as a broadcaster, I have been upfront, positive, and enthusiastic. Those same qualities, plus the ability to listen and bring people together, can make a strong impact in the state Senate. My background in communications, business, and teaching can help make a difference in the Legislature.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

1) Education: We should restructure the school system to respond better to local community needs. 2) Improving Business Climate: Jobs and business opportunities are created by free enterprise. 3) Brain and Youth Drain: We must be creative in our pursuit of opportunities for our young people.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Yes. We must find ways to make government more efficient. This means employing the most-qualified people to government positions. Reform doesn't necessarily mean cutting jobs; it means finding common-sense solutions in the most efficient way possible.

Marshall Ige

DEMOCRAT
Age: 45
Job:
Farmer of taro, ti leaves, kukui nut and breadfruit trees
Years here:
45

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

Raised on Keaahala Road in Kaneohe. Educated in Kaneohe: Pali View Baptist Preschool on Halekou Road, Benjamin Parker Elementary, King Intermediate, Damien Memorial High School, Windward Community College and UH-Manoa. Growing up here, I know how important our unique ecosystem, our mountains, streams and bay are to the families who call Windward Oahu home.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

Water: Taking more water from Windward to fuel the growth of Leeward Oahu will gravely impact the unique ecosystem of Windward Oahu. The military must develop alternatives. Education: We are failing miserably in preparing our children for jobs of the new economy. Leadership: We must work together for an even better Hawaii.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

No, the Legislature spent countless hours refining the privatization/managed competition process. We owe it to everyone involved in giving it an opportunity to work.

Solomon D.K. Nalua'i

DEMOCRAT
Age: 62
Job:
Retired surgeon
Years here:
62

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

I stand on the principles of honor, integrity, honesty and accountability. If elected, I pledge to work for you and with you, full-time, year-round in our Windward community and for our people's needs.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

Education, health and environment.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

The civil service system should be modified only to the extent that it gives all citizens equal opportunity, whether they choose to be unionized or not.
