Who Wants To Be A Politician?

House District 19

Diamond Head, Kaimuki, Kapahulu, Waikiki

*Denotes incumbent

Mindy Jaffe

REPUBLICAN
Age: 50
Job:
Former magazine publisher
Years here:
10

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

I have 25 years experience as a small business owner, from which I have developed strong problem-solving skills, a habit of efficiency and productivity, a work ethic that puts the customer first, and enormous energy.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

A stagnant economy stifled by government, a bureaucratically top-heavy public school system that does not provide adequate education to Hawaii's children, and a need to balance development with protection of Hawaii's environment, historic sites and indigenous culture.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Yes, changes are needed, and it would be best if they were initiated from the bottom up rather than the top down. Let workers redesign their own departments, procedures and policies to meet goals within an established time frame. Redundancies and contradictions should be eliminated; entities such as UH ... and counties should be able to negotiate their own contracts.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Yes, the recent civil service bill is a good step.
