Isle players
going strong
on mainland

THE collegiate soccer season is in full swing nationwide, prompting serious internet surfing for a sampling of how Hawaii's booters are performing.

Senior striker Brian Ching (Kamehameha) headed in a cross at 75:19 last Sunday to lift Gonzaga to a 2-1 victory over Columbia in the Diadora Cup at the University of San Diego.

It was Ching's third goal in four matches for the Zags.

Jenny deHay scored the winning goal for Louisiana State in a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech, Sept. 1.

DeHay, a freshman striker from Kamehameha, has started three games and played in all five of the Tigers' matches.

Kirstin Masunaga has posted four shutouts, two shared, in helping Colorado College to a 7-0-0 start. The Iolani graduate has given up just three goals in 644 minutes of action during her sophomore season.

The Tigers are ranked No. 27 in this week's Soccer Buzz Magazine Top 25 Poll.

Alana Cabatu (Hawaii Prep), a four-year soccer player at the University of Southern Colorado, also is a fifth-year senior setter on the Thunderwolves' volleyball team.

Hawaii is still well represented in Pueblo. Mililani High School midfielders Anthony Deocares, a senior, Marc Hasegawa, a junior, his brother Ian, a sophomore, and freshman striker Kerry Miike are on the Southern Colorado men's team.

Senior striker Kathy Sadayasu (Waiakea) has scored one goal for the women's team.

Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., easily wins the distinction of having the largest Hawaii connection on its soccer teams.

The women's team has seven local players, led by senior midfielder Kelli Ann Miller (Kamehameha). Striker Joely Gutierrez (Waiakea) and midfielder Shanell Kawasaki (Kamehameha) are redshirt freshman.

Joining the Boxers this season are striker Kailana Sato (Waimea), defenders Seanelle Laufalemana (Molokai) and Jean Kasamoto (Mid-Pacific), and defender/midfielder Malia Ho (Maui).

The men's team has sophomores Ryan Stanley (Kaiser), a goalkeeper, midfielder Kevin Arizo (Mililani), defender Kaleo Titcomb (Kamehameha), and freshmen Curtis Higaki (Leilehua), a striker, and defender Seth Yee-Lee (Iolani).

Reid Nakamura (Iolani), has decided to forgo his senior season after being accepted into the veterinary medicine program at Tufts University.

Molokai Special Olympic soccer teams placed first in the unified division and second in the traditional B division in the recent state tournament.

Unified teams are a combination of Special Olympic athletes and regular players. Koa Mana won the five-team unified division and took home the gold.

Na Mo1o, in a four-team division of only Special Olympic athletes, were silver medalists after dropping the championship match to the Ducks.

The Toyota Cup match featuring the European and South American club champions is Nov. 28 in Tokyo between Spain's Real Madrid and the Boca Juniors of Argentina .

South American soccer confederation officials considered changing the format and the site of the tournament, suggesting Buenos Aires or Miami as possible sites for a revamped multiple-game format.

But a change never materialized. The tournament remains a one-game championship.

The reigning champion is England's Manchester United, which last year defeated Palmeiras of Brazil.
