Curses fill the air

INTERNECINE warfare: A well-respected Hawaiian Mug shotwoman who's volunteered for years to serve food to the poor at the Institute for Human Services, was at Kanak Attack recently. People were heaping compliments on her for her efforts in feeding the hungry and she replied somewhat surprisingly, "No need to thank me. I have a goal -- to see Henry Peters in line." Now that's a real Kanak Attack! Not that the former Bishop Estate trustee is a candidate for IHS, mind you ... Jack Sullivan, the professional Irishman (and soccer maven) who dresses up like a leprechaun each St. Patrick's Day, recruited a helper a few years back. Frank Conkey dons phony white beard along with Sullivan and rides in the St. Paddy's Day parade. At 85, he doesn't get around as well as he used to, so Sullivan loaned him one of his finest shillelaghs to help him get about, and now someone has walked off with it. Sullivan suggests if nobody returns it (and he's in the phone book) there'll be two angry leprechauns launching Irish curses the thief's way ... By the way, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick are holding a St. Brendan's Day party Saturday night at Murphy's to mark half-way to Paddy's Day ...

Bill Mufi and Red

TAKING hubris to new levels, Red Morris notes that Bill Gates began Microsoft in 1975, the same year he incorporated G.A. Morris Inc. "Bill kind of took off in an opposite direction," notes Red, but he's having a 25th year celebration at his home on Saturday, with Mufi Hannemann, a friend of 25 years, as guest of honor. Bill couldn't make it. Both Mufi and Gates attended Harvard, with Mufi getting his degree and Gates dropping out, and UH grad Morris knows the school is in Cambridge, Mass. Still, Red notes, he uses some of the tools devised by Gates, opening Windows for his clients while Networking through the state legislative system ...

FORMER KITV sportscaster Rob Fukuzaki, now with KABC-TV in L.A., staged a celebrity golf tourney in Whittier, Calif., for the Heads Up Youth Foundation and raised $30,000. Among those showing up were former Miss Teen Hawaii Kelly Hu, now a successful actress in Hollywood, and ESPN's Kimiko Tanaka. Putting on a special sax performance was Michael Paulo, who won the "B" flight by shooting an 83, plus former L.A. Dodgers Jay Johnstone, Charlie Hough and Tommy Davis. Helping stage the tourney was localite Ed Nishioka ...

HANK'S has shown itself to be a stepping stone for bassist Ken Pua'a and his group, Ou Makou No, and now they're exiting their regular Friday night slot there to head for greener (as in money) pastures. Stepping into the Friday slot at the Nuuanu Street Hawaiian-style saloon is Pierre Grill. Hank is now auditioning talent for the Saturday night slot once occupied by Grill ...

Tenafly boy

AFTER filming "Hawaii Songs of Aloha" for PBS at the Hawaii Theatre (along with the Brothers Cazimero and others), Barry Flanagan of Hapa was chatting with director Steven Read and to his soundman, Day Bennett. Later, in a conversation with Bennett, he discovered that the latter is married to a girl from his hometown, Tenafly, N.J. If that weren't enough, Mrs. Bennett, Anita, was a grammar school classmate of Flanagan's at Mt. Carmel. He'd read many small world items in this column, but this was a first being in one ...
