The Big Games

FOOTBALL:

Lots of matchups of unbeatens on tap this weekend. Friday, it's run-and-shoot against single wing as St. Louis and Punahou battle for ILH supremacy (no word yet on whether St. Louis QB Kelika Higa's shoulder is healed or backup Bobby George will start again); Waianae visits Mililani in a big OIA Red game and Castle comes to town to tangle with McKinley for early White bragging rights. Saturday, Farrington and Kahuku knock heads; Lahainaluna and Maui battle for the MIL top spot, and Hilo plays Kohala in a key BIIF tussle.

See team standings on this page for times and sites.

VOLLEYBALL:

Punahou and St. Francis square off Tuesday at Sacred Hearts in a match that could determine the ILH girls' first-round champion.

Here And There

Crusaders rising

St. Louis climbed in five national high school football polls this week: Rivals.com (7th to 6th), Fox Fab 50 (9th to 8th), Butkus (9th to 8th), SchoolSports (11th to 9th) and USA Today (14th to 13th). ... The Punahou volleyball girls became the first Hawaii team to be ranked by HighWiredSports.com. The Buffanblu are No. 25 in the nation. ... The ILH boys' water polo regular season starts with two matches Friday at Iolani. Pac-Five takes on Punahou at 6 p.m., followed by Iolani and Kamehameha. ... The OIA riflery season begins Tuesday, as does bowling. ... Former Maryknoll principal and current teacher Jared Kaufmann is in his 31st year of coordinating bowling for the ILH and 30th for the state.
