Questioning controversy

DID you hear that someone got knocked down during the rally a group of disgruntled Hawaiians held at Washington Place. I hear he was caught between Haunani-Kay Trask and a TV cameraman ... There's a wonderful photo you won't see in the newspaper of a smiling Trask waving a Mug shotsign with a four-letter verb and "Ben." ... And don't you think the Hawaiian activists realize yet that Cayetano isn't the kind of guy to take threats idly? ... And is it a surprise to anyone that Hee had the last laugh -- that would be OHA's Clayton Hee, named chairman by Gov. Ben Cayetano ... And what's with the parents of kids at Makaha Elementary School who are upset that the principal there thinks kids should learn to read? ... Just a few questions of the day ...

FORMER downtown denizen John Lamkin emailed birthday greetings from Columbus, Ohio, where he and wife Lu now live. He's always keen to welcome me to his age group. He describes Columbus as "a charming place to live except for no beaches, no palm trees, no ocean and few if any Hawaiians." He feels better now that he's located a nearby pub named O'Toole's, and his new neighbors are the Murphys ...

THE Emmy Awards show was remarkably amusing this year, thanks mainly to host Garry Shandling. He's so superior to past hostess Whoopi Goldberg! I was happy to see "Will and Grace" finally get the recognition it deserves, albeit at the expense of my favorite, "Frasier." And after seeing "The West Wing" win all those Emmys, I may have to finally watch it. On the David Letterman show Monday night, he read a list of Emmys scored by his network, CBS. There was his own show, of course, and Patricia Heaton who plays Ray Romano's wife on "Everyone Loves Raymond." Shrugged Letterman, "That's it." ...

Steel away

FOR fans of the steel guitar, the Halekulani's House Without a Key is the place to be this weekend. On Saturday, Jerry Byrd will be joining the Hiram Olsen Trio with subsequent guest artists playing with either Hiram or the other house group, the Islanders, through Sept. 23. Entertainment there is from 5 to 8:30 p.m. nightly, with the guest artists sitting in at 7:45 p.m. Former Miss Hawaii Kanoe Miller dances nightly except Sunday, when another Miss Hawaii, Debbie Nakanelua, is featured ...

WORD from Stockbridge, Mass. is that a play directed by local resident Martin Rabbett, "The Shadow of Greatness," was declared by the Berkeley Theater Festival director to be the most successful play in the history of the event. The fact it starred Rabbett's great friend and housemate Richard Chamberlain didn't hurt ... Then there's Joe Ricci, who played in the national tour of "Carousel" and will star in the Diamond Head Theater production opening Friday. The New Jersey native is really going local. He's already taken his first surfing lesson and been certified in scuba diving at Hanauma Bay, something you don't want to try in New Jersey ...

Signs of the times

WHILE I feel sign wavers can be an endangerment to motorists, I have no problem with yard signs. But state Senate candidate Fred Hemmings does -- specifically his problem is with people walking off with his. He's hoping the culprits are merely souvenir hunters, but is offering a copy of his book, "The Soul of Surfing is Hawaiian," to anybody returning one, no questions asked ...
