Star-Bulletin staff

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team is moving up the national rankings.

Unbeaten in six matches, the Wahine jumped from No. 6 to No. 2 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released yesterday.

UH received eight first-place votes, while Nebraska (7-0) received 48 first-place votes to jump from fourth to first in the rankings.

The Wahine beat Northwestern in three sets Sunday night to win the Wahine Challenge tournament. They also beat Oregon and Creighton in the tournament.

Rounding out the top five are Penn State, Colorado State and Long Beach State.

Hawaii also moved up to No. 2 in the Volleyball magazine poll.

In a season-opening 48-0 shutout of Central Michigan, Brees threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Brees then went 32 for 46 for 417 yards in a 45-10 win over Kent State.

Near-perfect picks win in Fever contest

Frank K.C. Ng has had perfect 10-0 ballots before in the Football Fever contest. But the retired Pearl Harbor shipyard worker has never had his ballot drawn.

This time, Ng didn't go 10-0. But his 9-1 record was good enough to win the $500 weekly prize.

"I'm surprised because I've had 10-0 ballots and never been chosen,'' said Ng, a Kaimuki resident. "And I play every week.''

Football Fever panelist Brickwood Galuteria of KINE had the best record for Week 3 at 8-2. All ballots with an 8-2 record or better were eligible for the weekly drawing.
