HPD chief names
assistants

Police Chief Lee Donohue has filled two administrative vacancies by promoting Rafael Fajardo and John Kerr to the rank of assistant chief, effective Sept. 17.

Fajardo joined the Honolulu Police Department in March 1965. His command assignments include the Special Services Division and, most recently, the Traffic Division.

Kerr, one of the finalists for the chief's position that went to Donohue, has been commander of the Waikiki patrol district.

Fajardo and Kerr will be assigned to Special Field Operations and the Administrative Bureau, respectively, succeeding retired Assistant Chiefs Robert Kane and Barbara Wong.

Donohue's top administrators are Deputies Michael Carvalho and Robert Au, and Assistant Chiefs Stephen Watarai, Henry Lau, Eugene Uemura, Boisse Correa, Fajardo and Kerr.

Maj. Jeffrey Owens moves over from Central Receiving to replace Fajardo in the Traffic Division, while Thomas Nitta, who is being promoted to major, is the new Waikiki District commander.

There are two other new majors, Alan Fujimoto and Terrence Yuen.

Fujimoto will command the Waianae patrol district, succeeding Gordon Young, who has been transferred to Central Receiving. Yuen joins Maj. Louis Souza in the Legislative Liaison office, replacing retiring Maj. Forrest Broome.

The first incident was reported at about 9 p.m. by a 22-year-old man, who was struck on the head with a metal bar and robbed of cash by two male acquaintances at his apartment at 60 N. Nimitz Hwy.

The man fled through a bathroom window. He was treated for a head cut at Queen's Medical Center and released, police said.

Shortly before midnight, two men using pillow cases as masks confronted and robbed a man, 25, and woman, 23, in the basement parking area of their apartment building at 2132 Lime St.

The suspects, armed with a handgun and knife, tried to force the couple into a car after robbing them of cash and jewelry.

The suspects fled in a brown Honda after the male victim managed to break free.
