Nami pulls down
Kaio, leaves Maru,
Chiyo in sumo lead

TOKYO, Sept. 6 (Kyodo) - Former ozeki Takanonami pulled down newly promoted Kaio to a first loss Wednesday as yokozuna Musashimaru and ozeki Chiyotaikai emerged the unbeaten leaders at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Takanonami's win over Kaio, leaving both wrestlers at 3-1, highlighted a day of upsets at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan that saw ozeki Dejima, sekiwake Musoyama and No. 14 maegashira Kyokushuzan all saddled with their initial losses of the 15-day tourney.

Takanonami, wrestling as a komusubi, showed no signs of the ailments that have plagued him this year and cost him his own ozeki ranking as me met Kaio head on at the face-off of their bout.

The lanky former ozeki took control of the back of Kaio's head as the debutante charged out low. Then twisting to the left, Takanonami rode Kaio into the ring's surface for his 500th win in the makuuchi division.

Win No. 500 ranks Takanonami eighth among active wrestlers in wins. Futagoyama-beya stable mate yokozuna Takanohana, sitting out the fall tourney, tops the list with 635 wins.

In other upsets, No. 2 maegashira Chiyotenzan (2-2) muscled out Dejima (3-1) and the other second-ranked maegashira Hayateumi (2-2) backed out Musoyama (3-1) after a waltz around the ring.

Former komusubi Kyokushuzan (3-1) of Mongolia, wrestling as a No. 14 maegashira, made the mistake of trying to pull down No. 13 Kinkaiyama (2-2) by the back of the head and was plowed out.

Meanwhile, defending champion Musashimaru remained unbeaten as he marched out komusubi Akinoshima, who lost his third straight since posting his opening day win over yokozuna Akebono.

Chiyotaikai erupted out of his crouch against winless Kyokutenho and rammed the No. 3 maegashira from Mongolia out of the ring for a one-sided fourth win.

Also on the fourth day, yokozuna Akebono (3-1) tied up Tosanoumi (1-3) by the belt off the face-off and met little resistance as he forced him out of the ring for a third straight win.

Ozeki Miyabiyama (3-1) overwhelmed Kotoryu (1-3) from the face-off and knocked the top maegashira off his feet with a well-timed shove.

Sekiwake Tochiazuma pushed out winless No. 3 maegashira Tochinonada to level his record at 2-2 although his heavily taped right shoulder appeared to cause him quite a bit of pain.

In a battle of winless wrestlers, American 12th-ranked maegashira Sentoryu slapped down No. 10 Tokitsuumi for his first victory of the tourney.
