Woman in Ponzi
scheme is under arrest
in halfway house

Question: What ever happened to Montez Ottley, the woman accused of being involved in a Ponzi scheme about a year or two ago?

Answer: Montez Salamasina Ottley of Laie is under 24-hour house arrest at Miller Hale halfway house on Oahu awaiting trial Nov. 7, said Deputy U.S. attorney Larry Butrick.

Ottley, 55, was ordered there by a federal judge because of the government's fear she was a risk to flee or intimidate witnesses.

She is one of the two accused leaders of the alleged Ponzi scheme that defrauded some 4,000 investors from Hawaii, the mainland, American Samoa and Japan of more than $40 million from June 1997 to October 1998, prosecutors said.

A Ponzi scheme does not legitimately invest money but diverts it to personal use or to pay off earlier investors. Whatever money was seized remains in federal custody. After the trial, a court commissioner will determine who gets what, prosecutors said.
