Tips aid investigation
into Kauai murders

LIHUE -- Kauai police are continuing their investigation into the rape and murder of Daren Singer, 43, on a west-side beach last week, and said yesterday that "detectives are following up on information received over the weekend."

Police on both Kauai and Oahu said they have received numerous tips following the publication of a police artist's sketch based on a description from a 53-year-old Kauai woman who was stabbed and beaten during a rape attempt in West Kauai on May 22.

It was the first time the sketch had been seen throughout Hawaii, although it had been published previously on Kauai.

Detectives believe the same man may be responsible for both of those crimes and the April 22 rape and stabbing murder of Lisa Bissell, 38, whose body also was found in West Kauai. All three victims were petite Caucasian women.

Inspector Mel Morris said horse-mounted patrols along the West Shore coastline will continue, and the FBI has agreed to provide profiling of possible suspects.

Kauai police also are awaiting crime lab test reports from evidence taken at the murder scene by Honolulu crime-scene technicians.

Singer, who lived on Maui, was camping alone on a remote beach at Pakala Point when she was killed.
